I've discussed using magnets that come in a roll from Michael’s to make a different type of master board, similar to Velcro but where you use a metal sheet instead of the Velcro master board.

Since the magnet material has glue on one side, you cut out the bottom part of the foam core leaving the top cardboard outside. Cut the magnet to whatever size you want then peel and stick it to the cardboard. That makes the magnet recessed so that you don't get some form of odd bulges on the bottom of the foam core and it's strong enough to hold the pieces in place.

I'll take pictures of it once I can afford to build the master board as money is really tight right at the moment. Ah, life interfering with my gaming habit! That just sucks!
