Skip the foamcore and go straight to Mount board / Matt Board. Stronger more dense and easier to handle when cutting. This will give more weigh to the model with out being silly.

For small structures, use only matt board!
Foam core is going to be about 1/16" thick while matt board will be only 1/32".

As to structures that are larger, still only use foam core where you need some depth to the walls.
Additionally, one can use a combination of 1/16" foam core with doubled matt board if the project calls for it.

Where do I find matt board? I get my foamcore at Wal-Mart, and haven't seen anything else in the same section.
