Staples doesn't accept generics (even staples brand). Although, they sometimes have sales for bringing in generic and buying name brand.

abajan, I guess the easiest way to describe the position Mel and I are at is that we like to avoid accidents;
AND
there is a great difference between being frugal and being miserly.

A fair amount of what you last posted abajan fought against itself, but I can see where the point of view comes from.
Indeed, I have met a fair number of folks that would agree with you.
On the other hand, they are also the only ones I have ever known that had a toner/cartridge burst, break or do some other negative action that resulted in needing a complete printer replacement.

Making every cent/pence/etc. count is not the same as cutting corners.
Cutting corners, miserlyness, causes accidents that can hurt far more folks than just ourselves and cost a great deal more money than simply being frugal.

My HL-4070CDW and the two Canon photo printers belong to the business I run. I don't take unnecessary risks with the business equipment, and that's just something you're going to have to get over.

If messing around with your cartridges makes you happy, that's perfectly fine with me because it's YOUR printer, and what you do with it isn't really any business of mine.

Don't take the fact that I'm not inclined to take your advice personally. It's no reflection upon you at all...it's just that we see things differently.

Hi guys

Been quite a while since I've posted here. Just wanted to let you know that since my last post I have done the "tape to block the light" trick countless times and the printer still works wonderfully. The only problem I have had was black spots appearing on printouts but there's a solution to that. If the printer is left on for an extended period of time (weeks) the spotting tends to lessen. However, the actual cause of the spotting is one or more of the cartridges being almost empty. Once the cartridge(s) is replaced, the spotting vanishes. You'll know which toner is nearly empty by observing the colors of your printouts but if you have difficulty determining which one is the culprit, invest in an accurate scale and weigh each each cartridge.

Also, on an unrelated topic, if you ever get an "Unable to print 32" error, turning off the printer and then turning it back on (as the control panel message instructs) may help but if it doesn't, don't be too hasty to carry the printer to get it repaired.

There can be three causes for this error:

1. Pieces of paper or labels stuck in the drum unit or elsewhere in the printer
2. The low voltage power supply is dead
3. (This one is not as widely known as the others) There is cyan toner covering a small area inside the printer

If upon careful examination you do not find any paper stuck anywhere in the printer, try cleaning off the spilled cyan toner before having the low voltage power supply repaired or replaced: Turn off the printer and unplug it, open the front panel, remove the drum unit, belt unit and waste toner box. Now shine a torchlight inside the printer to the right back at the bottom. If you see a dusting of cyan toner anywhere there, wipe it away with a clean soft cloth (I used a Q-tips cotton swab). Replace the 3 units in reverse order, close the front cover, plug back in the printer and when you turn it on, 9 times out of 10, the error will be gone and you'll be able to print okay.
