Yeah the traditional liquid 'super glue' is a bugger to deal with. Way too wattery plus you seem to get more than you need and it never stays where you want it to.


I was kinda excited to see some 'brush on' versions of super glue as well. Price was a bit more than I wanted to pay; most places have a small bottle for $4.99... I can get 4 tubes of genric GEL super glue for that price.

The GEL form does still have the dreaded CA in it so best to handle with care and use properly.

I spotted a glue today at a craft store, it said no wrinkles. Anyone tried "Beacon" brand "Zip Glue?" It was clear in a small bottle with conical nozzle.

Yeah it works Paul BUT be CAREFUL of the fumes!!! Its not a good one to use in non-ventilated areas.

Zip Glue is the best one of the main glue's I use.

I've got a bottle of Zip Dry made by Beacon. If it's the same stuff, I highly recommend it (but watch the fumes as Denny said). It bonds pretty fast (you can still reposition things slightly though) and pretty strong. Nonetheless, I still use a glue stick for large sandwich folds.

Don't know if anyone has tried this but I found a pretty good cheap glue for doing small tricky things and repairs, and no fumes.
Aleene's Quick Dry Tacky Glue in the grey and purple bottle. Don't glop it on, just use a thin smear, it holds very, very fast fast and I have not had any warping. I've even used it to glue cardstock edge to edge.
The normal Aleene's works ok, but the quick dry is by far the best.
Easy to get this stuff even at WalMart.

Tombow Mono Aqua is some good glue. The dispenser has a pen tip and a broad tip and is refillable.

I work for Beacon Adhesives, the manufacturer of Zip Dry. I am glad to hear that many of you have found the superhero of paper glue. It never EVER wrinkles paper. If you make a mistake, you can reposition without damage. If you have excess glue, just rub off and it leaves no residue at all.

I finally bought some brush on 'super' glue (actually bought the 'krazy glue' brand) and it's terrible! I love the brush but the glue is just worthless. Very very very watered down, soaks through 110 lb cardstock like tissue paper, takes over 20 seconds to form any kind of bond, and usually forms a weak bond even when it finally does work.

Wish I could get the GEL type with a brush.... maybe I'll just fill the bottle with Super Glue GEL instead =)

I just couldn't take crappy glue sticks anymore and was in the mood to try something new.
I was at the art supply store try something new for gluing the large panels and street panels together. I have the little manual roller and so far it is working surprisingly well.
The adhesive goes on very thin and even and no warping. And they actually stay glued, wow.
The big problem I have down here is that we have high humidity and the glue sticks don't hold up when we game out in the garage for extended periods.

I've been using UHU "Twist and Glue" since I moved to Spain. It works well, sets and drys quickly and I can buy it at Carrefour (a Wal-Mart type store).

I just bought two of the UHU Twist & Glue's and I have to say these are pretty heavily water based, along the lines of the tall fluid clear sticks that have the sponge tip for application.

Con: Water based, a test of two carts from VillageWorks (one with Stick one with Twist) ended up with a slightly warpy cart. Completely workable and the cart is not garbage lol, but there is warping.

Pro: The applicator tip can be twisted from very fine to very broad, this makes it great for application to tabs and smaller areas, used sparingly in combination with the stick glue I found it was much less messy to use and better for quick seal operations than the stick glue. It does dry quick and used sparingly I think it could be used for full builds.

I built one of the SkullCove boats with combinations of curves, box folds, back to back folds and many tabs, as well as the base (based for durability on Matboard) using both glues for seperate areas. I can recommend it as a handy quick dab glue but not to sure I'd want to do it for large sandwich folds and such, would love to see some pics of your work T-G, I'm curious to see the results of your final builds, and yes, it was carried at the local Wal-Mart.

I know this post is probably long dead, but on a recent trip to my art supply store, I learned that the UHU office glue pen has apparently been discontinued. The page on Amazon seems to confirm this. Has anyone heard of a replacement pen being released? What are my best alternatives?

I'll second that.

Been using Zip Dry, which the Jo-anns a block away from me carries. So far it is pretty good, though I've had a couple issues (other than the fumes).

First is that its a pain to put down - the bottle seems to re-seal itself so it requires quite a squeeze to get out (though I used a knife to poke a hole in the tip rather than cutting off the tip). If it is a large area and I put it on too thin it dries quick, so its difficult to cover a large area.

Second is that sometimes it doesn't seem to set too well and ends up gummy like rubber cement instead.

I figure these are both user error. That said, I prefer it over my 4 other options (Staples glue tape runners - my 2nd fave, Uhu pen - warps, Uhu purple glue stick - hard to spread and dries very quickly, and staples purple glue sticks)

Tape runners are pretty much perfect for making TLX walls. They're all I use anymore for walls.

For things that need actual glue, I alternate between Scotch Clear glue (can cause warping, which is why I don't use it for walls), and gel-based superglue for those tiny bits that MUST NOT COME UNGLUED.

And with standees, I <3 my Avery Gluepen.

The glue thread is never dead, merely on hold.

This did explain why I could not find the UHU office pen. I did find the Aleene's Tacky Glue pens. They work great on tabs, narrow folds and places you really need to stick but can't get good smooth contact surfaces (like putting corners on slightly miss matched walls). The other I have great luck with for those long big pieces, trees come to mind, that you don't want to warp I found the UHU stic #317055 works really well. Just have to make sure you get everything coated.

OK, I know this is late here but I use this stuff called Zip Dry, it's cheap, lasts a long time and has super hold. I have had NO issues with warping.

Long post, but the experience was so night and day I had to share.

I stumbled across WWG a few days ago and decided to give Castle Works a try. Sounded fun and my 4 year old daughter wanted "A castle where my princess lives!" Gluing the tabs was driving me nuts due to having to hold each tab in place for the glue to dry. After just a few of these I saw my wife's scrapbooking supplies sitting there and grabbed one of her "Tape Runners". It was a whole new world that turned a tedious process in to quick precise joy. I spent some time researching these over the last two days. See the link below for one example, but don't let the names fool you. These devices DO NOT use glue or tape like you think of it.

What these devices do is to basically apply an industrial adhesive similar to what is used in professional framing shops. The adhesive is similar to what is used on a high quality double sided tape, BUT there is no tape. Just a few mils thick archival quality adhesive with essentially no moisture content and acid free.

Down side is the cost. Figuring a CastleWorks simple tower inc base and topper is ~7yds (bit of over kill) of 0.25 inch tape is ~$1.90 per tower vs a guess of ~$0,25 for quality glue. Expensive compared to glue, but my time and frustration are worth a few dollars a week. If you're doing alot of modeling see below for how to cut that to ~0.90 per tower.

My first model with glue was not bad, but had minor warping in the long joints and some misalignment where parts shifted during the gluing. and was a slow process. Second model was about perfect (ZERO warping even on the long thin crenelations for the topper, and alignment was much better because nothing moved once I pressed the surfaces together) and the assembly took about 1/4th the time. (BTW, total cost for the simple tower and topper is $3.75 for all materials with this adhesive system. This is with off-the-shelf retail for ink, foam core, and paper.)

I have no fear for the long term reliability of the adhesive - scrapbookers are rabid in their demands for quality products. Some of these people are true chem geeks and have gone to the lengths to set up national governing bodies (such as Creating Keepsakes) that are the UL of the craft world.

If you are really serious about it here is the professional version from 3M: The Scotch ATG 714 system. Break even point vs. the craft style disposable dispensers to cover the initial cost of the dispenser is about 40 simple towers.

According to the serious scrappers ATG 908 Gold in 0.25 inch is the stuff you want. Acid free, archival quality, etc.

Is this stuff at all repositionable or moveable or do you have to perfect in the first shot?

There are both permanent and repositionable, but I'd only use the permanent on models as the repositionable is more like a Post-It note. Once you apply pressure then it's an instant bond. I've found that I can touch down a very small area (like the hinged edge of a tab) and then lift it again if it needs to be repositioned. Once I touch down any significant area of a tab then it is permanent. Apparently some of the brands have a short re-work period, but I haven't looked into it much as I want the instant bond.

While ive only been paper modeling for a short while ive always been crafty and knew i needed a low water glue for the cardstock. Having not been able to locate the UHU products everyone raves about I grabbed this off the shelf simply because of the dual tips. However once I started using it I wont use anything else. The glue is nice and tacky and spreads easy. The orange color is nice to see how much glue your applying and it dries relatively quickly but allows for some wiggle room to get things lined up properly. While it IS possible to squeeze out TOO much glue im certain that can be the case for any liquid product. If you watch your glue flow you cant go wrong with this one. Thats my .02 anyway.

I love the idea of an orange color. That helps SOOO much when trying to determine if you've laid down some glue or not, how much you've put down, and where it is. I find myself twisting and moving models around a lot to see the shimmer of clear glue.

I may try this stuff for the larger sandwitch folds. I'm getting kinda sick of the UHU office pen. It's....ok.... still looking for something better.

Love the super glue gel but it's kinda expensive to be using on large areas.

Interestingly that was exactly the glue I was using when I turned to the glue runner. It worked OK for me, but I found I still felt it moved around to much when I was trying to keep parts aligned. Glad it worked well for you. I've been thinking about going back and giving liquid glue a try now that I've got several builds under my belt, so I pull this back out of my daughter's craft bucket and hang on to it.

As 10$ less MSRP sounds like a winner. 3M's Spra-Ment is the first spray glue I've gotten good performance out of, but I was lucky and got it on sale cheeeep. That won't happen again, so I think I'll either switch to Loctite or ...something.

So I tracked down some of the elmer's no-wrinkle pens and I have to say I'm somewhat disappointed. It's great for flat pieces because I can put them under something and they don't warp or wrinkle at all, but for 3 dimensional items I cannot get it to dry fast enough to be useful. I was using craft glue before, which you only have to hold in place for 30 seconds or so before it's set enough to move on... Are my expectations for this Elmer's stuff too high? Am I doing something wrong?

The Elmer's can be tetchy in drying if it's overapplied even a little. I use a scraper made from scrap cardstock or chipboard to spread the glue and thin the application. Of course, I also use magnets to keep ahold of the join once it's in the right place so I can walk away and do other things while I'm at work.

I've been shifting to using the Loctite Gel superglues for my props and other non-flat items lately, too.
