I was looking for coins to use and found a collectable set of real metal coins, but too much IRL coin and I did not like they did not really stack and that they had denomination differences. I found the coins of realms printout here, but I do not like the idea of cardstock coins. So my idea was to buy poker chips and use sticky labels to make them into coins.
First step was to cut/paste circle cutouts of the existing human coins from the .pdf. I use GIMP and made it so the circle cutout blended into a black background. This is important because labels do not always align, and you want a shadow edge to cover up misalignments, but it will cost lots of ink if your printer does not have a black cartridge so you may want to use a black outline rather than black background. GIMP defaults to 72dpi, had to up it to 300dpi, so that resizing the coin layer does not lose resolution.
I modified the talon piece to make it an E (for ep) instead of T, cutting out a circle which I added hilite and shadow to make it look like a thin coin. My thinking these are something the local smith hammers out, so I roughed it up a bit. For pp I used an archaic chinese nickle made of ivory, it had a dragon on one side and worn chinese on the other, this fits since pp are an archaic coin only found in archaic treasures per lore. I am switching to a silver rather than gold standard, otherwise the copper pieces would go unused.
I do not plan to use denomination coins, the decimal system stepping up by 10 makes it easy to see how much total coin you have. Or you could just do a different chip color for a 25 coin which is a full chip stack. I bought a 1000 chipset so that should be plenty for a full party, instead of parceling out the 500cp treasure, just give 1ep each.
The template I used was from an online place that sells labels by the sheet, 9x7 1" circles offset 3/8" over and 1/2" down and 1/8" apart. Easy enough to grid and tile in GIMP. I bought glossy photo labels as well as a clear sticker to protect from sprite/cheetos damage.
Of course poker chips are bigger than coins, a compromise for easy stacking, but the 1" label fits in the center. An online chips and games site had a solid color clay chip that was the same weight as a D&D4e coin, the clay chips are more expensive as it was "same as what casinos use". Very unhappy with this set, as I already broke one and roughed up a few edges just unpacking them. Their thickness is inconsistent since they are not mass produced, I could not always fit a 25 stack in the tray, and on one side there is circle ridge under the label spot. It feels like playing with fragile antiacid tablets, somewhat chalky and clacky, you do not want wet/dirty hands as the clay will absorb. So clay chips are a bad idea, but it was the only one I could find that was solid color and had the label inset that was not plastic.
So I went back to the same place and got their cheaper composite resin chips with the metal innards for weight and more of a coin clinky sound, bit heavier than a D&D4e coin but I cannot feel the actual difference with the prior set. They had a set of 1000 your choice on color, so I got 200 ea of Red for cp, Grey for sp, Orange for ep (do not like the 100 coin step between gp and pp), Yellow for gp, and White for pp, with no denomination stamps since I will use labels. They are not solid color, they have a white d6 set on the border maybe that can be used to mark the die to indicate denomination. They are mass produced so many places sell them, but you have to shop around for the places that do the custom sets. I thought the center was detented for the label, but it is flush. So I am a bit worried they will not stack well after labeling, or if I need to do some tedious dremel disk sanding as an inset label would look much better.
There is a cheaper solid color chip on the market made of stamped plastic and outer rings of diamonds with a lighter less of a coin feel. But it has same issue of no label inlay, and they did not have the grey chip for sp, would need to use blue or black. So I am going to stick with the heavier metal innard version, and besides dice are D&D so that casino theme fits!
The least expensive box the chip place had I am very happy with, they had 300 and 1000 capacity boxes made of cigar boxes, but I got the lower profile oak box that had some nice treasure chest antique bronze looking hardware on it. For the price I was expecting cheap quality, but it is very nice carpentry.
I am debating to use inkjet printer at work, which always has problems with ink streaks and paper jams, but I know my home printer would quickly use up the expensive ink. So I may just find a print shop that will take my photo labels and see how much that cost.
So did I end up at less than the metal coin collectables set? Probably not considering the boxes cost more than the cheaper chips, and I am stuck with the clay chips which I will repurpose as colored condition bases. And there will be all the time of putting on labels to consider! There are places that will custom label chips with art, but since you would want different art for each coin that might get expensive unless you have volume, something to consider if this site wants to have some chips printed up and add it to the catalog.
