Hi Guys,
After viewing the user galleries, I was wondering if any of you guys would be able to offer a newbie advice on improving the general quality of builds?
Some of the things I've noticed compared to my own rickety Terrainlinx Mayhem construction site:
1) Posts are so nice and straight! Mine either sit an an angle, or I have trouble slotting in the walls, there are gaps where it doesn't quite touch the base etc.
2) Walls look so sturdy! Most look perfectly straight and durable, mine either bend slightly inwards or outwards, or are misaligned no matter how perfectly I try to cut/score manually.
3) Other people's models look well weighted! They look like they have a certain 'weight' to them, everything fits nicely. Mine on the other hand...looks like it was build by a boy scout using sticks and would collapse at the faintest gust...How do you get it to fit so nicely?
I would say that the two biggest things for my personal learning process were to edge before glue and to take extra precaution when scoring. Straight score lines lead to great builds. Edging hides any small mistakes and takes a model from paper to something much better.
Also, I love using matte photo paper and will never go back.

My experience and abilities are not the best here on this forum as some are much better at this than I am. But, I figure I am pretty good, and my sets are beginning to look pretty good.
I use a ruler to cut out everything. If you can afford the machine to cut out, that might help, but I find that cutting out the wall, then scoring the piece, then gluing the piece, then folding the piece onto itself to make the front and back sides, work best for me. I will place it under my cutting mat over night to dry before I cut out the slots and then justify the bottom and side edges. I know some say to edge them with a marker first, but I find that doing another cut along both edges and the bottom make for a real nice edge that takes the edge of the marker real well. I know it is more work, but I like the looks of the edging better this way. The problem comes from the score line. It is never exactly perfect in my opinion. This creates a bottom and side edges that do not line up exactly perfect. Edging them sometimes leaves one edge with a nice black edge (or whatever color you do use) , while the other side to the piece is still white and hard to edge. My way leaves both edges perfectly the same length and they both take the marker perfectly.

I've been using a robocutter for a long time now, but every now and then I find myself hand-cutting some pieces. I did my time hand-cutting though... I never score without a ruler, and I do my best to make sure I'm lined up straight. I always go around my pieces and edge with a sharpie or similar marker before I glue most things, with the exception of posts. I've found, for me, it's easier to glue the posts flat first, edge them, then glue the tab on to make the post.
I use Super77 spray glue for walls. It goes on very evenly, very quickly, and holds pretty well. Gotta burnish - I just give each wall a good rub down with the padded part of my palm. If you're using something like a white glue, use VERY LITTLE as it's full of water and stuff that will warp your paper.
I use 110lb cardstock. The cheaper the better, for me. The print quality isn't as nice as matte photo paper, but I appreciate the cheaper price tag.
To edge a piece... I edge around the cut parts, then I completely fold over any scored edge and run the marker along it. A little practice and I rarely botch it up (though occasionally I slip and leave what I affectionately call "weathering" on the texture )
When I glue together my posts, I first use spray glue to sandwich them together. Then I edge around the post and between the slots. Finally, I use a little white glue spread evenly on the tab, get it in place, then squash the post flat to get nice pressure on the tab. After about 10 seconds, I open it up and squash it along the other side.
If particular pieces are giving you trouble, post a pic or two and maybe you can get some specific ideas to combat problems.
I prefer to score while cutting (start at one edge of the paper and make all of the vertical cuts and scores then rotate the paper and repeat). I ALWAYS use a ruler for scoring. Freehanding cut lines is sometimes required with specialized cuts like curved edges, but don't freehand score lines.
I also prefer to edge before glue due to it preventing marking the detailed face of the model. I do also touch up edge as needed (but that is very minimal).
The machine cutter can help a lot (I love mine and am easily 3-5 times more productive with it). At the same time I spent years without it and so I would not call it a requirement...just a time and hand-cramp saver.

I've already learned a lot through both designing and bashing. Edging works out pretty well and can hide a lot of sins (like washes will hide a lot of sins on miniatures). Scoring is an absolute must. And double-sided walls (such as those in TLX) are a hell of a lot nicer to work with than gluing single-sided pieces together.
When assembled, 2" walls are easier to work with and lay down minis and props than 3" walls. Sadly this makes the mall build a bit tough... tons of single-sided 3" walls there.
Kitbash / Boosters Works In Progress: TLX - Deadfall - Dusty Alleys Booster MMM - Beefy Chef (Reworking) TLX - Evil Genius HQ - Inner Sanctum
Use a ruler for all score or cuts on textured lines. The only place I have cut is tabs.
I always start by scoring. I use a normal wood awl held mostly horizontal. So the tip drags like a tail. I find that the creases it make on the front work great regardless if they are forward or reverse folds.
After cutting I glue only sandwhich folds with a glue stick and dry under weights. Then I edge everything using matching color markers. I fold the pieces flat on the creases while edging.
Then I glue tabs to make the 3d shapes. I have always used elmers for this. But its a watery glue, so I apply only a little using a tooth pick to make sure its a real thin layer over the whole tab. Then I squeeze it very tightly using a very long pair of needle nose pliers that DON"T have teeth. After a couple firm squeezes over the whole tab area it holds fine and I set it aside to dry completely.
To make you build look more weighty try using antiwarp walls everywhere. They keep straight and look much more substantial.
The posts are easy to square up. Just squeeze them back and forth at the corners and they usually square right up.
If you walls aren't going all the way down try cutting the slots in the post and walls just a hair past the cut lines when you are making them.
A laser printer will also make the prints look WAY better. Matt photo paper helps injets prints look much nicer. But I found prone to flake and scratch VERY easy. And it was so thin I had to glue it to thin cardstock to make it at all sturdy.
I use this same general process no matter what I'm building: cut and score, edge, then glue. My post in that thread was specifically about making posts, but it applies to walls and other pieces as well.
Check to be sure that your printer is printing truly square: print the page for a floor tile and measure in both dimensions to make sure the tile is the correct size. If it's off, even by a little, then your build will have tiny errors that will be come more and more noticeable as you add more to your builds.

I do follow most of the comments made above. On top of those comments I have 3 felt tip pens to edge, they are: Light grey, Dark Grey and Black. Once you have cut your pieces out ( I have a SD cutter) I then pick the best colour pen to edge with for effect. Some green and yellow look better with the light or dark grey pens than the black. If in doubt start with the light grey.

1) edge before glueing 2) when building walls, press the folded wall in a heavy book for a couple days before doing anything else. 3) when building walls, I cut my slots slightly wider and taller. Like 1/32". 4) when building posts, I cut my slots slightly deeper. Like 1/32".
I still have issues getting the posts on the anchors sometime, but hey...
