I put some picts in the gallery to show you how I made a foldup gameboard with vinyl self stick floor tiles and duct tape. I printed out my map and stuck each piece to the floor tile and then duct taped the 12"x12" floor tiles together.

Cool! Did you have any issues lining the cardstock up properly with the tiles?

When using this method do you tape all the seems when the tiles are flush together? Or do you need to leave some slack for the seems that will fold multiple layers of tile? When opened how tight together are the seems on the playing side.

For instance in the pic where an already folded layer is being folded over perpendicularly.

I've been contimplating making a board for playing pirates ccg. The table I use is a 47" diameter round table. So I figured the board would be 6 or 8 sided to reduce the overhanging corners.

I also need some help to determine the dimensions. Specifically the length of the sides. Also which version 6 or 8 uses less printed tiles. I'm hoping that the scapes from the diagonal cut well be the right size to fill in the diangonal edge on an opisit side.

I've used the vinyl tiles before to good effect...the only complaint I have is that they're all 12", and WWG tiles 7". I wish I could find a 15" vinyl tile somewhere.

I looked some more and found this:


You input in feet and inches with this one. It won't show a diagram of each individual polygon, but it works like the octagon calculator in the earlier post. Remember (like I didn't a few times ) that is asks for the radius of the circumscribed circle, not the diameter. So a 47"(3'-11") diameter circle will fit a polygon with a 1'-11½" (23½") radius (center to vertex).

Also how do you keep the marking pencil verticle? Any tilt in it and the circle will warp, if it meets up at all.

I don't know what it would cost to buy a compas that can make a 4' circle. But I bet that its more than I'd pay. This board is already going to cost enough as it is.

I know of no affordable compasses at that size.

You can keep the pencel very close to straight just by tying it as low as possible...though a steady, carefull hand is also important. How tight do your tolerances need to be for this project? You should be fine if you take it slow and steady.

A yardstick can be used to draw large diameter circles. Some home made trammel points that fit on the yardstick and using a nail as the pivot and a pencil to draw the circle can be made. There are also some commercial trammel points available You can draw a cirlce up to 6' in diameter using a yardstick. If a larger diameter is needed, find or make a piece of wood with the same thickness and width as the yardstick, but make it as long as you need. The yardstick and trammel points help keep the pencil vertical.
