Hi all;

Not sure how long the sale will last, but I was in my local Michael's stores today (two of them in fact) and they were selling the 20" x 30" white foamcore panels for $1 per sheet. Regular price is $2,79 I believe.

Now, I prefer the black (with black foam) for basing and such, but for $1 per sheet I couldn't resist picking up a bunch of these.

Heh. I still have 10 sheets from the last time they had a $1 sale.

I've been trying to add the linx system to most of my more recent builds using foamcore as the base, and have not really been happy the results. I do like using foamcore for the walls, even if it means taking a little longer to build something.

Not a thick as the scenic foam I mentioned in another thread, but still helps to create straight walls!

I think what I'm going to do for my basing is switch to masonite and put a rabbit and groove joint on it, but haven't even begun experimenting yet. I've gotta look at somethings at the local HomeDepot and ask some questions and make some decisions before I start!

By the way, thanks for the heads up on the price of the foamcore, I'll still use that for walls!

I have no idea myself. I figured it's another term for dovetail, which is basically what all those bow-ties look like, but I'm glad I wasn't the only one clueless.

Yeah after posting yesterday about the Rabbit, which is how it's usually referred to, I started looking around and found a couple of dovetail jigs that would make building the bases much easier. So I'm starting to now look into using a dovetail joint idea.

Course, I'll have to build the pieces like the following...



Because of the way a dovetail works, I really don't see any other way of getting a good fit, so I'll have to cut the flooring. I might go with a blind dovetail, but that will be somewhat harder to deal with and I'm not sure I'll get what I want that way.

My biggest problem is buying the jig. The least expensive I've found so far is around $50, unless I buy one on eBay, and I'm not sure I want to buy a tool there.

And as far as why bother, I'm not talking about using it to build the walls, I'm talking about making a system to quickly put together/take apart modular system. Only the basing would have the joints along the edges. Well, what ever edge where you would expect to join the pieces.

For halls, it would be on the ends, for rooms, it would be on 3 or 4 sides. I'm trying to create a system like that used by Dwarven Forge, but that will be lighter, less expensive and still hold up to some abuse. The current linx system is nice, but since it's build using foamcore, it doesn't have the long lasting power that I'm looking for.

That and I find that when I'm cutting the parts for it, I'm not overly accurate. Maybe I'm being a little too critical, but with a jig and router, I'll make much cleaner cuts!

If the thickness of your basing material is thick enough, have you thought of using a biscuit cutter? Or even doweling?

Masonite wouldn't be thick enough, it's about the same thickness as foamcore. But using biscuits or dowels is a good idea!
