The Kyocera FS-C5100DN color laser printer is accurate, and takes 190g paper very well.

I just picked up an HP OfficeJet 6500 Wireless on sale for $149 from Best Buy. (can get them for as little as $129 from Amazon, I think) First initial tests indicate that it's pretty accurate. Vertically, it's perfect. Horizontally, it is consistently less than 1/4 of a mm short. I don't think that's enough to matter. It also handles 110 lb cardstock really well. I haven't tried coverstock as none of the local stores has even heard of it.

I want to get this printer for the stellar graphics and support input ports for pictures but I don't have or want wireless in my home. It says in the product info that you can use a wired erthnet connection but I only have one port for that and it is in use for my DSL. So how can I hook up this printer???

You should double-check to be sure, but wireless printers almost always have usb ports (this is how you would set up the wireless).

Do you have a router (sometimes advertised as a "DSL Router"), a hub, or a switch? Or is your network just a connection from your computer to your DSL modem?

HP 2600n on a 6 inch print its 1/16in off, and does not feed heavier than 80lb from tray, will feed 100lb from manual feed.

Tr0ll, did you install a CISS onto your OfficeJet 6000? I've found one online so far that says it'll work for all the 6000/6500 series printers, but somebody mentioned that the installation was a pain in the butt.

Mine was really easy, bought it off Amazon, the black line was plugged it seemed so I disconnected it from the cartridge, stuck a syringe into it and sucked the ink through, then I ran 20 or so prints on junk paper to make sure the ink was flowing right then ran a couple cleaning runs and was done, now its perfect.

This is the one I ordered, Amazon says it will work with the 6500

According to the info it does have a USB port. Other than that it just comes with a telephone cord and a erthnet cord.

My DSL is is just a connection from the DSL modem to the computer. There is nothing else except a reset button.

In that case, Delta, you've got 2 options:

1) hook the printer directly to your computer using a USB cable, which may or may not come with the printer. Buying them separately usually just costs $5-10. This option is much simpler and much cheaper than option 2.

2) buy a "DSL router" or hub or switch and put it between the DSL modem and your computer. You'll need another network cable or two for this setup. And it's likely to cost you a minimum of $50--more if you need a router. And you most likely will need a router if you want to put that printer on the network. This option is definitely the more complicated and more expensive one.

Does all that make sense?

Dell AIO 946 Inkjet. Inaccurate, unfortunately. Width prints fine, length always a bit short (which I didn't notice until I printed about 30 sheets, dammit!).

Just tried one of these yesterday, unpacking it for a customer. Its own test pages come out with fuzzy colours. the colour registration is stuffed right out of the box, the black is ghosting (boss says it may just need to be run in for a while) and I tried the manual rego page TWICE with no uncommon good effect. A test page I got online and put on the work computer came out wavy like an analogue TV with a cheap rubbish antenna which noone bothers upgrading because they know the analogue system is going to be disabled and scrapped soon. Colours and details horrendous. No wonder it's only $600aud or so.
Please add to the "didn't bother to test a standard tile as it is so rubbish anyway" list.

I have a Cannon i-sensys LBP7200Cdn. It can printer 7x7" tile ( i have modify some scale) and respect them, but the sides printing limit are 3/16" (4.5mm) are it a accurate printer?

I also have this printer. I'm new to the whole paper modeling thing, but I've been selling this printer and the rest of the series since they were released, and the reason for the refill problems is that the ink is pigment based, whereas most of the refill kits use a dye based ink. The 6000 series printhead is not designed to use this type of ink, and, as far as my reps tell me, using those refills is a sure fire way to damage the printer (*insert pound of salt here*).

Incidentally the Officejet 8000 series, and, as far as I know, the Photosmart series printers that use the 564 cartridges all use a pigment based ink as well, so this would probably hold true for all of them, though I have not tested refill kits in any of these machines.

Epson Artisan 710 -- accurate!

Just bought a HP Deskjet 3050 Wireless. Tested it by printing off a tlx mount sheet and its off by about 1/64th on the verticals over a 6" line. on a 3" line its hardly noticable.

I'll put it to heavy use soon and see how it stands up.

Thanks sunraven01, I picked up an Epson Artisan 725 today based on your report on the 710. Same printer, different console. It is accurate, fast and has 6 ink carts. Win all around.

I can also confirm that the Artisan 725 is accurate (and extremely fast to boot, it printed a 6"x6" tile in like 3 or so seconds). The Hp Officejet j4550 however prints about 1/16" short.

I'm looking at buying an Epson Workforce 630 to replace a printer that just died. Do you (or anyone) know if it has the same print engine/will also be accurate?

Also, how is ink consumption on the 610?

I went ahead and bought the Epson Workforce 630, and it is perfectly accurate, 6" tiles come out exactly 6" in both dimensions.

A report on ink life will have to wait until I've used it longer.

Just to reconfirm: the Canon Pixma iP4820 is accurate, and CISS installation on it is simple. I had to scrounge for Linux drivers for it, but if you Google for "Canon 4820 Ubuntu," you get a page that points to a Canon download site for both .rpm and .deb format installation packages. I don't seem to be able to align the print head through the Linux driver, but I borrowed a friend's Windows laptop for that, and it works just fine with my Ubuntu netbook now.

You can add the Epson Stylus NX415 to the accurate list. It sometmies has issues accepting cardstock but when it does print, the scale is coreect.

Canon iP90v??? Can I ask why you're using a portable printer for terrain and props? I mean, I know how good it is first hand, but still....

Ok, I've had this printer for a few months. I love the print quality and it's accurate, but I'm starting to get ghosting/smearing of magenta -- very faint, but it runs in bands across the page. If I clean the heads, it's better for a print or two but then is a problem again. I'm going to try Epson tech support. Wish me luck

Edit 12/6/2011: Call to Epson & they were very helpful. Sent new Magenta cartridge & things are working well again. I'd say a thumbs up for the printer and Epson support.

Because, as you pointed out, it's a portable printer and I can't fit an iP6600D in my backpack, and I spent a few months in 2007 working out of my backpack and later in a corner of the master bedroom. (The more permanent components of my office were packed up and in storage the entire time.)

I don't use the iP90v for large quantities of full color printing, but it needed to be able to do the job if necessary, and I'd have returned it immediately if it didn't print accurately. I mentioned it here for the sake of completion.

Fair 'nuff. Like I mentioned previously, I used to work for Canon doing printer support, so I know how good it is. It just kind of surprised me that someone would use it for printing out terrain. And you probably could get large volumes of color printing out of it. There was an insurance company that used to supply their agents with these printers. It would normally take them about 9mo-1yr for them to kill the drain-off resevoir and need it serviced... but then again, they were typically printing like 25-50+ pages at a time, 2-3 times a day; so they were practically using it like a portable printshop.

I just set up my new Epson Workforce WP-4020, and it scales out square and true. No CISS yet, but perhaps by the time I use up the starter carts and the full set I picked up online...
