Is there an easy or convenient way to print Uncharted Space as a single image?

There is a print shop right behind my house, and I usually get them to do large prints, as well as laminating.

A made a 2" hex battletech map about 32"X40", and they had no problems printing it.

I could probably do this myself if Uncharted Space came as JPGs instead of PDF..

Any thoughts on how to do this?

If you are using Acrobat Reader the copied image will only have 72 dpi (at least it does on my Mac). For a proper copy you would need Acrobat Professional.

However, quite a few paint programs can directly interpret the pdf format. I am using Photoshop and it is quite easy to open a particular page and copy the contents into a different file (I am often doing this to twaek colors or to save paper as I am using A4) ... in that case no quality is lost.

As the size of the slices is fixed you can define a path and reuse it on every page to exactly cut the image. Alignment should be no problem in that case. Just predefine the new image to be slightly larger than the full image and trim it later. Also be aware that if you stick to the resolution, the end file will be rather huge (I guess >100 MB as Photoshop file). When exporting as jpg set the quality to at least 7-8 or else quality will be lost.

It might actually be easiest to ask Denny for a full map pdf. Maybe he can make it available for people who own Uncharted Space. I would prefer that too as I have the A4 paper issue ...

I would like to offer a word of warning here on getting a print shop to handle this on a wide format printer. It is VERY likely that your end result will be a blob of black with no stars and very faint dust clouds (barely visible actually). This is due to the fact that the original PDF is formated for RGB printing on your home printer and not a standard CMYK process used to properly separate color values on a traditional printer.

I can say the above with some authority as I have the long painful journey of optimizing Uncharted Space for printing tangible mats under my belt. We went through over 6 prints before arriving at values which showed up properly on vinyl. I have a CMYK version that works for this process but it's locked down for a tangible production run.

All of that said, if you know a talented printer who can tweak and adjust values without any cost concerns, you can probably make it work.
