If you are going to go that road, Buy cheap 6x6 ceramic tiles for 40 cents or less apiece. Print the tile on photopaper and fix it to the tile with spraymount. A bit heavy, but it's not going anywhere and should survive almost anything. I plan to do this with a number of tiles I am modifyiing from 7x7 to 6x6.

The ceramic tiles might work for basing the ground tiles. But they won't work for basing item tiles like paths or hazards. Those lay on top the ground tiles and the ceramic edges are way too thick.

hmmm....how about mattboard with washers on the bottom for weight. Mattboard is thin and durable and the washers will keep it from moving.

If you get Armstrong brand tile it comes in all colors including green...Is fairly cheap...Has no glue on it and is easy to carve with a knife.

Home Depot typically has one "really cheap" individual vinyl tile that's something on the order of $0.29 each (12x12) and comes pre-glued (which I find handy).

I could easily see chopping one of these up for a sturdy base for a variety of bits and pieces.
