So I picked up a Brother 4070 CDW, as I mentioned in another thread.

I've been working on Wormhole, and as I've been working on it, I had to switch from using a ruler to freehanding most cuts, because my ruler (all metal) was scratching the toner off the pages! This was mainly an issue on the V parts of the stands, where it is most noticeable. My marker can touch these up (as its against a black background) as needed.

So far my solutions is to just freehand most of cuts. This works out fairly well, but I still use the ruler for most scoring.

A second option would be to get another ruler, one with a cork bottom The problem is this results in a raised ruler, so ideally it would be cork-inset. Haven't found one like that yet.

A third option is to try to find another metal ruler that has less sharp edges; my current one definitely feels like it's edges are sharp. I suppose I could also use a fine grit sandpaper or metal file to try to take off the edge.

The final option I can think of is to hit the page with a quick spray of some matte sealer like Dullcote (I use this for my Warhammer models). Haven't tried that yet, don't know what it would do to the pages.

Has anyone else had this problem? Any recommendations?

If your toner's coming off easily, it's not being fused to the paper at a high enough temperature. Make sure you're using the correct paper thickness settings in the printer driver (this is what sets the fuser temperature on the 4040/4070.)

I use a Helix Non-slip safety ruler. It has two rubber strips on the bottom side for the non-slip function and a channel on the top side where your fingers go for the safety function.

I do not print with a laser printer, but the rubber strips seem like they would not scratch the surface. They protrude just enough to get a grip and do not raise the ruler off of the page as much as a cork backed ruler does.

I used to have this problem.

First solution was to put a thin strip of stick-on rubber on the back of my ruler. This lifted the ruler clear of the surface and stopped that problem.

Now I use a . It has two rubber beads running along the back that keep the ruler slightly above the cardstock as well as holding it in position really well. Not the cheapest option, but it was the only ruler with this feature I could find here in NZ. It has been worthwhile investment, as it is a dream to use. If only they would do an even shorter version.

I picked up a new aluminum ruler from Staples, and my scratching problems went away.

The steel ruler I was using had ever so slight - and relatively sharp - edges - you can feel them if you run your finger down it. Not enough to cut flesh, but enough to scratch off toner if dragged across the paper.

I couldn't scratch the toner off if I tried with my fingernail, though my razor blade tip could.

The aluminum ruler has a really nice feel to it too, though it's not no-slip.

Never had that problem. There is something wrong with the fusing process. And try to avoid playing with those levers, usually there is only one reason to change them and printing on cardstock isn't it. Leave the fuser suspension levers at maximum pressure.
