Hobby shops have small brass pins that can be cut to length, or you could use a straight pin with a flat head for the same purpose.

Or a strip of clothglued uned the texture. Advantage is that it won't wear out. Down side it may not hold the door straight as card stock.

It might wear out eventually. It may not last 10 years of daily use without repair, but how many times are you going to use the terrain, and for how long does it really need to last?

I like the idea of pins, and using hollow plastic rods could work as well. It does not need to be particularly durable - it will just come under the heading of "it would be cool if..."

Have you thought of dolls house door hinges? They must be small. Only problem i can see is the durability of the foamcore to hinge adhesive.

Any movement on this? I am intrigued to see what comes next.

No actual work since I last posted - I should be picking up some more foamcore this week, however.

I am eager with anticipation.

After a very long hiatus, I finally made my third and last 12" riverfront tile for this set.

This was by far the most ambitious of my fixed builds so far, as the bridge surface is a curve rather than a straight ramp, and the bridge sides are curved inwards as well, making the railings rather tricky to cut out of foamcore, seeing as they needed to curve in two different planes at once!

I think I pulled it off, though, and here it is, by itself and then along with the two other riverfront pieces:-












The water effect has not been added to the tile base.

The gates hinge, and Johnnytrash's suggestion for making the hinge was almost exactly the one I went with. I made it even simpler though, and just cut through the foamcore leaving only the card on one side uncut. I embedded magnets in the doors, so they lock closed

I doubt I will make anything else for this terrain set, now. With this last piece I have gone way (way) beyond my original aim of quick and easy terrain, as this single piece took three nights work and a heap of planning. Still, can't wait to get a game on it this Saturday

Seriously, though, I didn't really think I'd get much use out of the canals, but now I realize it was only because I wasn't seeing the potential of this set. Thanks for showing me the error of my ways.

Swift Scenics looks very appealing for this kind of build, and I am anxious to see what it involves. I have avoided doing buildings so far (eg. Thoumonts) as I hope/ expect Terraclips to solve that for me, but the Necroblock textures are stunning.

I am building similar canals, based on your work. How did you apply the Envirotex? The instructions say pour it and let it overflow off the item, which seems a bit of nightmare to me. Did you block off each end and pour? Also, did you varnish the labels first. Many thanks

I did not varnish the tiles first. I tried varnishing with brush-on and spray varnishes, but the results were very poor. So I just apply the Envirotex Lite direct, without any surface preparation. It does not seem to need any. It does darken the colour of the printed surface slightly, but nothing significant.

As for actual application, I do not let the EL run off the sides. This would indeed be a nightmare. It happened in one build, and the stuff got through a pinhole and underneath the part. It sets like rock, so I had to remove layers of foamcore to get it off.

When I apply EL I pour it on, and then spread it around with a brush. It is very viscous, so as long as you do not apply too much, it will stop where you want it to, and go where your brush goes, no more.

thanks for the tip on the use, as I get a better tiles made to replace my hack jobs I hope to add varnish to certain tiles to get certain effects as you have. -D²
