I wanted to edit one of the Streets of Legends Tile, so imported the tile into Gimp, and went about editing. However when I come to print and I think I have tried all options of paper sizes, with and without borders etc, the tile comes out slightly bigger or slightly smaller by about 3/16ths. Any ideas???? Using HPC4580

Check the image settings on the print dialogue screen, make sure the res on that screen matches the res of your document. GIMP does some odd scaling things if it thinks your image is bigger than the paper available.

It's best in Gimp to always set your canvas at least 2.5cm (1inch) smaller on both sides than the actual paper your printing to.

I'm assuming other WWG stuff prints okay on your printer

All printing from WWG is spot on.
Did a recheck of all my settings and still will not print to exactly the right scale. In fact Gimp2.0 will not allow direct printing to my HP C4580, so I have to save image asa jpg. Is this where the issue lies?
The software for the printer does not actually allowing rescaling by % as I would have done it that way to get around the issue!

So can anyone suggest a step by step process?

odd I run 2.6.8 on my desktop and use portable version 2.6.3 and print to a multitude of printers with both versions. Do you experience the same issues using the downloadable portable version from portable apps?

Im running the gimp windows version on XP,, which OS and gimp version?

few things you could try save the image as a png @ 300dpi and use something else to print, although I'm unsure why your jpg trick isn't working.

try printing to a pdf print driver and see if that works okay, bullzip and biopdf are two free examples you could try.

Hopefully someone else might have a few suggestions

Ok, went to snapshot tool in Adobe to select the road tile I wanted.
Went to Gimp and pasted. Altered image no problem, only simple changes and saved image in a variety of formats. (png,jpg,cxf)
Go to print checking my settings are for A4. If I try to print either through the latest versions of Gimp or Gimp mobile it won't print.
Can print through png and jpg but image is not right sixe.
Tried the bulldog pdf writer and yes the image is saved asapdf but again image is wrong size.
I suspect I have overlooked something but this is really p***ing me off.

If you install I think it's ghostscript Gimp can direct import pdfs...bit of a side tip ...,pdf import might even be supported without ghost script now.

hmm check these settings on the print dialog match your image settings:



no clue why your printers not being recognized I know gimp did have some issues with 64bit os's but I thought those had been resolved.

the adobe snap image tool might be distorting the image on paste? might be worth a check?

Following these guidelines will help keep things accurate and reduce image degradation caused by repeated JPEG compression, among other things.

Image Resolution

One common issue is that conversion image resolution is not the same as the original source model. If you want to know the native resolution of a given model, ask WWG for the numbers before you do anything. Getting this step right saves you a lot of head-scratching later on.

Raster images store image information as a collection of pixels, each of which has a specified color value. The number of pixels is a constant, and does not change unless you actually resize the image itself. When you change the resolution, you're telling the application that there are a specific number of pixels in an inch.

If you have an image that is 300x300 pixels wide, and you specify the resolution as 150 dots per inch, the image is printed at 2x2 inches. If you specify a resolution of 300 dots per inch, that same 300x300 pixel image will be printed at 1x1 inches. So, if you want to scale something up or down without forever losing detail, change the resolution, not the image's pixel dimensions.

When a raster image is extracted at a resolution LOWER than the native resolution, image detail is lost because the application that opens the file has to downsample the image to a smaller size. Pixels are discarded and the image is filtered to reduce artifacts, and those discarded pixels are gone forever.

When an image is extracted at a resolution HIGHER than the native resolution, image detail is blurred because the application opening the file is sampling upwards to a larger size. This effectively makes the pixels larger, and all you really gain from doing this is blurring or blockiness, and always results in an unnecessarily large file size.

Extracting Image Data

In order to convert something, you usually have to get the parts out of the PDF and into your graphics application of choice first. This is often where the resolution issue discussed above first pops up, because some people open the PDFs at the wrong resolution, or their cut and paste settings in Acrobat Reader are set incorrectly.

If you're using Photoshop, this step is very simple. Just open the PDF in Photoshop, pick the page you want, and Bob's your uncle.

If you're not using Photoshop, but your graphics app can open PDFs, make sure you open them in RGB mode and at the correct resolution. If a model was designed at 200dpi, then open it in RGB mode at 200dpi.

If you're not using Photoshop and your graphics app cannot read PDFs, then you'll have to cut and paste. To do so, follow these instructions:

1. In the Acrobat Reader menu, click on Edit>Preferences.

2. You'll see a large dialog with a list of options in a pane along the left side. Click on "General" in the options pane.

3. Tick the box next to "Use Fixed Resolution For Snapshots".

4. In the Resolution field, enter the resolution of the model PDF. (If the model is 200dpi, enter 200 here.)

5. When you open the model PDF, make sure you zoom out enough to see the entire page onscreen.

6. If necessary, click on View>Page Layout>Single Page in Acrobat Reader's menu. You just want to see one page on the screen at a time, which simplifies the next step.

7. Select the Snapshot tool in the toolbar, then click anywhere in the gray area surrounding the page. This will copy the entire page to the clipboard at the resolution you specified in the preferences dialog earlier.

8. Paste the image into your graphics app of choice. Make sure the newly pasted image's resolution is set to the same resolution as the source image.

The next thing you need to do, however you chose to extract the model data, is to immediately save that page to a lossless raster format like BMP, PSD, or TIFF. Don't save it as a JPEG, because JPEG encoding causes image degradation.

Exporting to PDF

This is where the second common issue comes in-too often, the software used to export a new PDF has a zillion confusing settings, and a lot of things go wrong at this stage. It's better to use something simple that you don't have to fight with.

I export PDFs directly from Photoshop CS. Life's simpler that way.

In Photoshop, when I save a PDF, I choose JPEG compression, with the "High" quality preset, and the Image Interpolation box ticked.

If you don't have Photoshop, and your graphics app doesn't have PDF export capabilities, then I strongly recommend you use OpenOffice.org's Draw app to create your PDFs. All you have to do is make sure the page is formatted at 7.5x10 inches, then:

1. Go to the menu, and click on Insert>Picture>From File, and select the image file you want.

2. OOo will then place the selected image at full resolution, which you can then snap to the page area.

3. When you export to PDF, a dialog will pop up asking you for a filename. Name it whatever you want, then click on Save.

4. A new tabbed dialog will pop up with some settings. On the General tab, choose JPEG Compression, then set Quality to 90%.

That's it. Your newly created PDF is ready.

I use OpenOffice.org for all of my text documents, instructions, and whatnot, so it's a suite that I heartily endorse.
