So, I'm in the process of building a prison using the CWU set. I'm trying to get an idea of how big it will be, planning stages and all and I started looking at the basing for the set using the PaperLinx version. My biggest question is...

How does everyone handle the buildings, stone or plaster with the set?

You have a 6x6 tile in the inch set, but you can't glue the 6x6 building onto it and still get to the linx holes.

So does everyone just let their buildings float on top of the linx board?

Do you put the linx tabs into the holes of the 6x6 tile and then glue the building on top, there by permently attaching the tabs to that tile?

What are you guys doing?

In my CW:U build (see the link to the pics on the WWG home page (I am so proud of that )), the central Keep is made up of the buildings. The blank ground tiles surrounding it kept everything together.

One idea might be to cut the receptor of the linx tab out of your basing material then attaching the floor print out and continue building as directed. You shouldn't need to permanently attach the linx tab as this would kill the modularity (unless you want something permanent). This way you would place the tile on the linx tab instead of the linx tab on the tile and it would be hidden under the building floor. Could get tricky to get the tab back out between two of the buildings though.

Hmmm, a prison is a cool idea - the naval prison in a town where once I lived is called "The Castle" by the natives. I may need to snag that one! A prison break would fit into so many games, modern, Victorian, and rennaisance. (Medieval society did not do much with prisons, and a great deal more with ropes and trees...)

Good ideas, thanks Barbarosa. I had wondered if the tiles around the buildings would keep them in place.

AuldGrump, in the campaign, the players have been given the task of securing some items to keep a 'god' from escaping his confinement. When they went to get the keep to the 'god's' prison, actually a temple, they were told that they had to free another person from a real prison. Then they'd be told where the key was hidden.

Don't think they really like the idea of breaking into a prison to free someone and I'm sure they think the guy they're going to break out is a bad guy, but that's not the case.

Course, what will make it harder for them is they prison guards aren't all bad guys, just guys doing their jobs. The people in charge of the prison are bad guys though and the players will have to be careful or else they just might end up in the prison.

I'll be posting pictures of the build on my site once I get more than just one gatehouse built, one tower and one building.

But again, thanks for the ideas.

Well, the actually cells are going to be below ground, dungeonesque style. The CWU part is the above ground section of the prison. Not sure if I'm going to make the prison built out of an old mine or just built for the purpose of being a prison.

It's a day's ride from the nearest town and I'm going to have 3 buildings inside the walls. 2 of the buildings will be 30 feet by 60 feet, 2 story buildings. They are the barracks, offices, and mess areas.

The last one, the prison entrance proper, will be a 30 foot by 30 foot, 1 story stone block house type. It'll be surrounded by a second wall inside the main outside wall.

For the cell area, I'm going to use either a competitor's set, (sorry Denny), or DungeonWorks, not sure which yet. But I did use DungeonWorks inside the block house for the stairs down into the cell area. As far as doors, I'm not sure if I'm going to have it be bars or the iron doors from whichever set I use.

A lot depends on how much time I have to get it built.

Like the toothpick idea though. Will either use that or transparencies.

That dragon is...WOW...damned cool!

OT, yeah, it is a great miniature, and with his head dropped low like that he is looking at something about 30mm tall or so, about human miniature size! For some reason after seeing him I wanted an underwater caveworks expansion, with a cavern big enough for his lair.

The coral that you see dotting the base is removable if you do not want an underwater scene. (But since I do want him for an underwater scene it is staying on mine.) I may end up posting the stats for him sometime, his base is just over 4", which makes him Gargantuan in D&D base size terms.

And I confess that I had not thought of the bandwidth issue, I may swap it out for a smaller picture, but that one shows the dragon to his best advantage. No reason to tick of Macfarlane toys, though I am am touting their dragons a bit. (Second series coming...) Mac Farlane's toys are so much cooler than his comics.

I now have all but the Sorcerer Clan and Berserker Clan dragons.

If I get the berserker clan I will have to get rid of the oversized human he is atacking and the flames, but he is a great wyvern!

Back on topic -
I have never used any of the alternate basing methods, preferring a more permanent set up. Spending that much time cutting litlle foamcore tabs would drive me batty! And while the velcro pads sound interesting they just do not grab me. If Denny's store ever gets up and running then preprinted, premounted, precut tabs and tiles might be an idea.

I have done my own alternates yes, mounting Cave Works inside of a 2" thick sheet of insulation foam - which has amazed me, when it is the wrong size for the project it was built for I gave it away, it has been part of our Mordheim terrain as a Skaven pesthole for more than a year now I think, ever since I found out how 'uge the Maiden was going to be. (I was off by about a foot - the Maiden would not have even fit in the cave!) It has stood up to rough play, but while the foam is chipped here and there it has done a very good job of protecting the cardstock caverns.

Getting the foam was interesting, I dealt with what has got to be the oddest rude salesperson in the world when I went to buy it. "I don't have time to sell a single sheet, just take it and go!' Rude, but free... I do not understand that one...

I have also tried some, umm, interesting basing techniques, including one using a glowstick, some water, some dry ice, and a sheet of the 'water' from the Maiden with the ripples cut out. It looked okay, but then I realized that there was no way I could make it big enough to support the entire Maiden... Scratch one nifty, but poorly thought out idea! Also, as the water was cooled by the dry ice the glowstick dimmed. But for about five minutes it really did look cool!:P
