Who says you can't make BBB's using UM:MA?

Here's something I threw together that may work for your "city block fill-in" needs:



Essentially, I took two of the "two-window" walls from UM:MA, kitbashed together a third one (guess which one?) and pasted them together with a strip of "concrete" in between, where normally the foamcore would show in UM:MA.

One long tab on the right, one long tab on the bottom. Total size is 7.5" by 10", so it fits on a single sheet perfectly. You could make alternative walls without windows, with 3 windows, with a fire escape, etc. Glue four of these walls together in a box, and you have yourself an instant 10", 3-story apartment building.

If you glue some skewers in the corner, you should be able to stack these up fairly high. They will also integrate perfectly with MA, so you could have the gunstore on the bottom floor, a 3-story block without interiors, and then some important NPC's apartment on the 5th floor.

I do everything in The Gimp under Linux. For Linux it's really the obvious choice, and you can't beat the price. Does everything you need for kitbashing, and a buttload more.

I do tend to go overboard a little once I start playing around with the Gimp though. For example, for this little kitbash, I decided I wanted to cobble together a third 2-window wall to avoid repitition. (The Apartment file actually contains 3, but one is a duplicate). So I copied the left and right hewn stone corners from another wall, copied the two windows from a wall and switched them around, copied a piece of fairly clean wall to patch the middle, then cut out the boundary of all these elements at the joins between bricks, and overlaid them on the blank wall, making sure the wall pattern lined up nicely. About 8-10 layers later, I got my third wall. Then I wanted a concrete strip between floors, so I grabbed the blank concrete garage floor, blurred the heck out of it to get an "average" color. Did the same for the hewn stone wall corners and subtracted the two colors from each other. Applied that color difference to the original concrete garage floor to color-match it to the corner stones. Didn't like the graininess, so I blurred it slightly. Then decided to add some vertically streaked noise using the Solid Noise filter, sharpened that a bit, overlaid it on the concrete, messed around with the levels a bit on the noise. Finally put everything together, cleaned up some details, added 1/2" tabs, cut it to size, and there we go...


The easy approach: cut and paste the three existing walls, add tabs... done!

Hmmm... guess this thread should have gone under "kitbash" rather than "wish list"

To make up for that, here's a "wish list" item: I'd love to see a more elaborate fire escape. You know... the crummy metal stairs going from floor to floor that always look like they were tacked on the outside of a building as an afterthought (which they probably were... as firecodes started to become stricter!) It's such a feature of delapidated american inner cities...

Ok, new WOW! Not just the cut and paste variety kitbash I still struggle with then.

I suppose I will simply wait on the BBB set.
