I'd like to see end pieces for the trenches - something about like the bend piece bit closed off to form a closed end of the trench. Also, hex or octogon shaped pit, with 1 or 2 openings to attach to trenches. Entrench the Siegeworks ballista or use with more modern weapons. The trenches are great for WW1 and WW2 games. These might make for simple mods, but I'm not up on all that stuff.

Though I think this is a great idea would it not be more impressive if one of the crew took the currently used mountain system tech (that was first shown in Mars Station then used in HellWorks I and again in Hinterland) and adapt it to trenches? I mean using Mars, Hellworks and Hinterland I sure it could be kitbashed nicely - though I would love some trenches tiles (boards with mud, soldiers bodies, a game of cards played on a create) to be used as a base and a impressive battle field tile set to match.

I may work on the octagon sides but I don't have the skills to create the ground for it.


I noticed that my trench pieces weren't laying very flat. I don't know if this is was always the case, or if its from being stored in a box for a year. But I found that if I added a piece of cardstock to the bottom it lays much flatter.





The pieces have a tab on both sides that are glued to the bottom of the angled faces, and its also glued to the bottom of the trench walkway.

Why won't the planks work for a pit floor? Wouldn't a weapons pit have to have them too?

I wouldn't know how to go about making that large a ground tile using the trench textures. I just think it would be difficult to get a larger ground tile that looks good using them.

If someone else would like to give it a go, here is the dimension I'm using to make the octagon pit.

Edit: For anyone who tries making the ground, it should be noted that the paths go through the 1 5/8" openings. I have it rotated this way so it will fit on the page when printed.

I'm making the octagon pit walls. After I'm done I'll try doing the ground, but don't expect much.

Looking good. I really should have thought about this in the initial release but the whole trenches bit got kind of added on to the basic idea of the engines.

While I've been working on these I noticed that, aside from the tunnel, there are no entrances/exits.

Hey, I think that SiegeWorks is one of Paul's most underrated sets. I mean working Catapult and Trebuchet! Come on! The sheer audacity to do that in cardstock is just awesome IMHO.

I agree, Denny. The same basic pattern could do the WW1 West Front or the entrenchments behind Normandy or many other things. Use those in a concrete texture for some of the fortifications, or as is for most things. These might also be a good exterior to move from an exterior into Caveworks if they ever bring out a CaveworksII as well. The mine entrance from the trenches carries into the mine going beneath the enemy fortifications. This would serve for Medieval as well as 19th and 20th Century.

Next June is the 65th Anniversary of D-Day. A Fortifications Works would be an interesting thing to do for that. Some different textures to make different periods, but an anniversary launch. Hmmmm. 28mm skirmish gaming is getting pretty big around the US, with about a dozen sets of rules out there, and miriad sets of minis. Current resin fortifications, even from the cheaper companies, are very high. This could open up another new market. And with the options of making something like Verdun, it could also capture the new trend in WW1 skirmish gaming that has popped up in the last year. Something to ponder, anyway.

LD2062, the ground in the bottom of the gun pit could be done with the boards, just the same as the trench floor, or it could be bare dirt. Give it a set or two of wheel tracks where the gun has been wheeled around, perhaps a few brass shell casings laying about, unless that makes it too modern - the user can add some scraps to make it into whatever period he wants. Worst case, if I had the octogon, I could simply cut a few trench floors up and piece them in.

We looking at a new kitbash product here? I'm up for it!

I'm satisfied with the geometry so I'm starting on the gridlines now.

I really recommend adding that piece of cardstock to the bottom though. The trenches don't fit very flush when the outer edges aren't laying flat.

Excellent. I could see my battery of 4 German 105s set up in those. The connecting trench is perfect for the scenario I was working from. And the generic nature is perfect fit for both the war engine in your pic and the 105s of WW2. Could even see a large trench mortar in WW1 in this setup. With my skirmish games, I wont need the grid, but understand many do prefer that.

Paul, 20th Century Warworks is just calling your name. There are some great shots of the fortifications of Normandy, Maginot, Verdun, etc., and a merged product that could produce a somewhat generic model that would do many or all of those would be great. Heck, I've been trying to sort out modeling barbed wire, and it now hits me that it could be simple to print to transparency, cut and coil. The base a simple flat with some posts to glue the coil to. Gads, so many options. 3" and 6" sections so sections can be removed for bombardments. And shell holes. Gads, I've been looking for inexpensive shell holes for my games. Good holes are hard to find.

I'm the nut that wants to use Shallendrak mansion as a French chateau for my British Airborne troops to take from the German HQ elements.
