I thinking of giving a airship kitbash a go. So I'm looking for reference pics: Artwork, lego builds, rough sketches, whatever. My preference is a wooden ship without some kind of balloon. A balloon just seems like it would a hassle to design and texture. And even if it could be done I think it'd just get in the way when actually in use. So I think one the had wings or some kind of magical lift mechanism is the way to go. Of course I'd still like to see pics with the balloon if the ship body itself is cool.

I've done a bunch of surfing but I've found few pics that aren't blimps. Even fewer without the balloon. Can anyone help?

The Auld Grump

An airship would be very cool. Depending on how it turns out you could use it in a variety of different settings.

Right now I still don't even have a reference that appeals to me. Grump's search suggestion did turn up a number of ships that might be buildable, but they aren't quite what I'm looking for.

I want something more fantasy based. Also I'd like it to have something that looks like its providing the flight ability.

Well, here's one that looks a little insane to build.



I don't know what series it came from, or what the ship's name is.

But on to something more productive.

I'd suggest the airship Crusade from the Vision of Escaflowne series, but that might be too steampunkish. Plus I couldn't find a pic of it fast without resorting to a screen shots. The crusade looks decently cool on the outside, but I don't have much memory of what the inside looks like.

In that series, rather than using big balloons to levitate, they used large anti-gravity rocks that fall when heated by steam and rise when cooled. That might be a decent way to go if you don't want to use large gas balloons and want to avoid futuristic tech.

I'd really love to do a steampunk ship. But there just aren't really any WW textures that are usable.

The escaflowne ships came to mind for me too. But I thought they where more steampunk. Yeah, the rocks floated them, but they were metal and used propellers didn't they?

The pic is cool, but I think theres a few parts of it that I can't make.

Thats much more like what I was thinking. Although I don't think there are a lot of available textures to make elemental ring. Perhaps the energy beams from red sector, or maybe take some of the various fire tokens and make a huge chain of them....

Anyone got better pics of the eberron ships?

I've actually been thinking about doing this as a Maiden kitbash, but never quite got 'round to it.

But I don't think I could make it from the maiden.

But there is a real problem with these Eberron ships, those energy rings. I have my doubts that cardstock could work to make a ring big enough to circle the maiden let alone the arms to support it. But franky even if it did, imagine how big a stand it would take to hold the whole maiden that high over the table. That just strikes me as too impractical.

Thanks for the information. Really I was trying to figure out how the hull would look if it were completed. I went online looking for references and none of the actual hulls looked anything like I would have expected. I live near the great lakes but I'm not familiar anything bigger than the boats people keep in their drives.


But I've come to expect that the airships hull should be much shallower than a water hull would be.

I think so. Which basically makes the Maiden and the boats from Skull Cove the ideal choice.

Hello, just wanted to say this is my first post. I apologize in advance if I have done any mistakes. Have you played FFXI? They have an air ship that sounds exactly what you are looking for. I won't post a pic, don't want anyone (specialy me) getting into trouble. If you can find a pic, I'm sure you could modify it more to your liking. It's a wooden ship that takes off and lands in water (no fancy landing gear to worry about), and has propellers. Hope this helps.

I have always thought the ship on the Yes Fragile album looked good.

It's not fantasy, but I've always like the ponderous and huge air ships in .

Somewhere out there in the electronic world there are free blimps and zeppelins to download as cardstock models. If you can find them (I don't have the link on my phone, so I can't even provide it by PM) they would make a really good starting point.

I am working on a Feral Ork army for WH40K, and haven't found a good feral Dethkopta yet. A few people suggested the mini-airship route, and I may try my hand at cardstock Ork micro-zeps here sometime soon.
