Sorry for the bad pun. It was my wife's idea.

I've excepted the fact that WWG might not be doing any more hex grids for their sets. So I'm going to be adding my Hex Kitbashes in all its various forms.

First off is Cave Works I bought this set ages ago and yet I still have not built anything with it. Although I drool over everyone else's Cave Works sets. After much deliberation I have decided to use the Place-As-You-Play option for my Cave Works working on 6"x6" tiles. I like using the half foot tiles as most tables are measured by the inch. At least they are back home.

Now the question is do I use thin walls or chunky? Both have their advantages. I am leaning toward the chunky style.



Do you realize how long it takes to remove a grid! Looks pretty good, at least I think so.

Yes I know I have to make two of each tile, but I figured I can store them in my loft when not using them.

Now the Chunky will take more time, however gives an additional level if you wanted to. The thin walls would allow for fast building.

I'm going to make new river tiles and stuff using Atlantis water I think. Need to purchase that one yet.

Lava tiles....There is a good bash for lava tiles (I own it, it is nice) but now with Hellworks out I'd like the lava to be the same. Not sure yet. I could always do a transition tile. However the Cave Works lava tiles have a grid over them so it would be twice the amount of work to remove the grid.

I am currently changing the Gothic Realms and Chunky Dungeon tiles into hexes. Gothic Realms is 50% done, Chunky might take a longer time to get done properly.

Any ideas or suggestions are always welcomed

I wouldn't even know how to go about removing a grid. But your pics do look good.

Ok here is a sample of the Gothic Realms in Hex.

You know, you're picture gave me an awesome idea...If you made the first tile with the raised platforms one way...and made a second completely the reverse, you could fit them together and make a solid cube for easy storage. If you're picky about it, just make sure they aren't directly next to each other on your layout and you've got a good customizable system.

Ok folks, I'm going to make some flooded caves. I do not like the water tiles that come with CaveWorks. So I will use more modern water tiles provided by WWG.

However which tiles should I use? I don't own all of them so that means I may have to purchase a set just for a water tile(s).

I'd like the opinion of those that own these sets and even better from Denny, Paul, Matt, Bob, and any of you pro kitbashers out there.

The water is going to be lifted and placed over the caveworks and Crystal Caverns using Photoshop, multiple layers and some other simple tools. I need a full water tile, so Hinterlands would be difficult as I'd have 5x the amount of photoshoping to do.

- Has a nice enough water tiles. Dark enough to be used for underground purposes.

- Reall nice water. not too rapid movement. I do not own this product, so I'm going off of pictures here.

- I do not own this set, I do intend to either way, however I'm concerned about the amount of light reflecting off the water. If I did choose this one I would need to reduce that glare.

- I own this and I do not think the water tiles will work for CaveWorks as there is alot of foam on them.

- Has some water terrain but it is a HUGE PAIN IN THE @R$€ to photoshop out a grid on water terrain.

- Has a nice dark tile but then again it is not offered in Gridless

Am I missing one?

After that is figured out I will start on Lava.

Ok first two tiles are done.

It is coming along fine, slightly fidgety, and I really need to work on my tab placements. These have the tabs on the top and bottom, in the future I will put the tabs on the walls instead.



The walls are slightly concave. This is due to the fact I put the tabs on the top and bottom of the pieces and not on the walls like I should have.

I have added additional supports on the inside of the walls to keep the tops from collapsing.



I'm going to add more Crystal Cavern pieces to that one tile.

Beautiful, even better than I imagined. I hope this one becomes available to the rest of us soon. Once again, a curse on you HP! my poor family may never see me again...

I would cut the geometry in half though if it was me. The curves are great as is but I really think you could get away with much less "flow" and still have it looking organic.

Denny: I will keep that in mind on the next one. I must admit that second tile was a real pain to make.

Having the tabs on the walls instead of the top really makes a difference on how accurate I make these. The first two don't sit flush with each other and the walls are slightly concave. When I placed the tabs on the walls it came out accurate, straight, and took half the time to assemble.

Andorax: I plan on using a lot of Crystal Caverns! It truly is one of my favourite WWG sets. I will have to play around with it so I can get comfortable placing them without making it looked "slapped" on, but never fear Crystals will be playing a pretty large part of my caves!

As for making this available all you need is Cave Works (unless you wanted the hex grid). It is just like making the cliffs with just an extra care of measuring so everything lines in together. I'd be happy to make a Tutorial if anyone is interested.

Now on to the subject of Hexgrids. Would WWG be interested in a Hex Bash? I would submit tiles for Cave Works, Gothic Realms, Castle Works Unlimited and Chunky Dungeons in Hexes. The Chunky Dungeons would take a few pages.

I'm still working on building my caves, but I don't want to share pictures until I get a really good size board done.

Until then I'm experimenting with Gothic Realms Sewers. Remember I am basing my place and play dungeon on 6" boards so I've had to make some changes. This is a sample and does not resemble what the finished kitbash will look like.



Now I'm thinking of making layover images for the horizontal pieces. So if I take a straight NtoS corridor and want to lay it EtoW the hexes will not line up, so I could either make an entirely new tile or make a 6"x8 1/8" scored piece that should lay over the original with new textures with the hex grid going in the right direction.

Yes I know I must change the side hexes so they match when lined up together.

I think he means instead of a straight line and cut off the hex in the middle. I think he is talking about where the straight line is you leave those hexes in tacked.

DR's method seems like it would be more cutting and edging, but also seems like it would transition much better. It also doesn't have the layout restrictions that the giant hex shape does.
