Well, this is largely for poops and grins on my part, as I figure out how to do things with Photoshop as well as how WorldWorks put together their various kits over the years. This series is basically me updating the Mega Mall kits to TerrainLinx for my own amusement. This update is looking at the wall textures for Vanka's Crazy Yurts. This is a six-inch wall test with clean textures. One is for the mall interior, the other is for the 'Armory' stores, if you want to have a Crazy Yurt house as a 'strip mall' or 'downtown' shop. I haven't quite figured out a way to weather the walls the way that Mayhem Mall did it, or at least make it as good. For this thread, the pics will be resized from 300 to 150dpi, munged into JPG, and thrown on with a watermark. So please keep that in mind. Comments welcome! Edit: Changed the thread title to reflect JUST this project.

(Not likely to use these myself, as I don't tend to play modern, but...) I like the idea, just looks like the 'clean' walls are way too clean. A large part of WWG's success is its terrain looks realistic, aka 'lived-in' (e.g. the grime on the brick sections). It will, no doubt, take a lot more work, but would make a huge difference if you can find a way to get that lived-in look on the other panels as well. |

The clean walls don't have any of the weathering effects applied to them at all. They also don't have the pipes, lighting, etc. Basically it's my first major step in this idea. I am struggling to get weathering that not only looks good, but fits with how Armory's textures are weathered, and it's proving significantly more difficult than I anticipated. It's also very easy to wind up over-weathering them, which is an issue that the original Vanka's itself has in a few spots. Still, I want to figure it out, so I'll keep plugging along at it as I can. ![]()

Hit a minor niggle in the design-size of things today. Malls have a 'false front' for each store, which gives you the overhead store banners (and can also be used for menu drop-downs, etc.) The problem is that TLX walls are single-height, one-story affairs, and these drown-down and banner pieces are about 1 1/2 stories in height. (Three inches, to TLX scale). Is there an existing TLX set that deals with this issue? Double-posting isn't out of the question, but I was hoping to keep these stores as simple one-story builds. Suggestions more than welcome! |

Not sure I understand the last point... You mean that your walls *should* be bigger than 1 story-high - but smaller than 2-story ? There are a couple of sets that have that sort of walls; For example the Garden has walls with curved tops that go beyond the normal height. HV Canals also has walls that are almost 2-story high (but still use 1-story high posts) Is that what you're looking for ? |

Just a little thing on the weathering of the walls. Some spots on the wall will have more "weathering" then others in a place like Crazy Vanka's (or any other food joint). These are typically over/around the vats and grills. The grease in these locations seems to permeate the walls. Then if you have a drink station the walls behind that will also exhibit extra "weathering" from the beverages spilling or splashing on the wall where the wall paper has absorbed the liquids. Plus also the floors under the grills, vats and even drink stations will also be grubby, if the business doesn't regularly clean under them (even one day of use for the grills can leave the floor nasty). |
