Clawing my way through partially finished kitbashes... I think I've wrapped up the packaging for this one (it includes the four tiles I mentioned earlier, two broken wall types pictured earlier, and the three post types to go with them). Preview pics and tlx planner files are ready - just need to make a cutfile to go with my half-length destroyed walls. Looks like I'll be crossing one more old kitbash idea off the list! |

Installed the studio software here at work so I could bash up the necessary cutfile that was holding this back... I can work on kitbashes at home and at work, but I find I do very different kitbashing depending on where I am... I just submitted this set with everything packaged up. Fingers crossed that I've submitted this correctly the first time through. |

I use GIMP, and am pretty proficient with it, but I agree that it would be nice to have a tutorial. Some things aren't readily aparent to me. |

Creating new textures or layering textures. I try, and sometimes succeed, but usually am not happy with the result. Like these ruined city tiles. Wouldn't know how to do that. And would love to have some Himmelveil walls with vines. Tried that and it looked horrible. |

Executive summary of this too-long-didn't-read post is: Become intimately familiar with layers, layer masks and the clone tool. At least, those three basic tools will get you a long way with kitbashing. YouTube is a great source for tutorials to see things in action. So, here's what I typed before the executive summary... I do a couple of things with layers, I guess depending on where my mind wanders... I always start with loading at least two tile pages into GIMP as layers in the same image. For example, Loading the Hinterland Forests grassy 6" tile in one layer, and below it, adding the Himmelveil Streets tile with a fountain on it. I put the street below the grass because it's easier for me to erase patches of the grass and still retain the feeling that the grass is growing over the edges of bricks or the fountain. To combine the tiles, I either just use the eraser tool and remove parts of the top layer to expose stuff below it, or better yet, I start with a layer mask. The layer mask is a useful tool for adding transparency to your layer without being destructive to the texture on that layer. Right-click on the layer you'd like to make partially transparent (in my example, the grassy top layer) and click Add Layer Mask. You'll be asked how to initialize the mask. I usually do a fully white mask so I start with the entire layer opaque, and I can add transparency. Sometimes I start all black, making the layer completely transparent, and I add bits back in, but not usually. It's easy to go back and forth between the two anyway. This will add another thumbnail to that layer. You can click on either the thumbnail of the layer (the left one) to edit the texture, or the thumbnail of the mask (the right one) to edit the mask itself. There's a white border around whichever one is 'active'. There have been times where I've accidentally pained on my real texture because I wasn't careful... With the mask selected, you can use a paintbrush to paint black onto the white mask, and that will make areas of the texture transparent. If you make a mistake, you can always color that spot back in white to make that area opaque. It's not an all-or-nothing thing - grey colors will make it semi-transparent. I actually think it just desaturates the color you're painting with on the mask. If you do this, you'll see why it was really easy for me to take the grassy tile from the forests and remove the dirt areas to expose the bricks, but it's really a crude method for getting small growth between the bricks like what was requested. The layer mask is useful for making complete kitbashes too, since you can copy/paste the layer mask onto multiple layers (like, on a gridless, 1" grid and 1p5" grid grassy tile) to get the same effect on multiple grid systems. For the fountain, I made heavy use of the clone tool to cover up the fountain water with textures from around the perimeter of the fountain. That just takes patience to try not to get the wrong colors copied, or get a lot of similar textures next to each other. After that, I used layers to re-apply the water, then I made layers to apply different styles of grime onto that. Working with layers is essential so that you can experiment without being destructive. For the tile with the trap door on it, I created a layer using one of the forest tiles that had a large amount of dirt. I then spent way too much time cloning the entire tile to be dirt. The layers went grass > dirt > street. I made the dirt tile semi-transparent so that it added grime to the bricks without completely losing the brick texture. I also used a layer mask to make the dirt fully transparent over most of the trap door. I felt the details of the trap door were getting too lost without doing this. The trap door itself was a separate layer, and I felt that without the dirt on top of it, the edges were too severe and made the trap door look out of place. The grass helped a lot with this too - I tried to keep a lot of grass growing over the edges of the trap door so you wouldn't notice the cut-and-paste job at all. |

The Executive Summary was too long so I skipped it and read the great stuff below it about layer masks. Thanks for that, I'd gotten so used to doing mods like this in a destructivefashion (erasing the top layer to expose the bottom) that I'd forgotten about the benefits of non-destructive layer masks. |

Back from the dead... I just raced through making a *new* set of walls that feature multiple layers of grass at the base (to hopefully give it more depth), a layer of cracks and grime and additional debris like I've seen in other broken walls. There's also more shading around the edges which I think will help. I'm up from 2 pages to six, including a bonus page of grimed up archways that you can cut up manually to make some busticated variants. I'm on vacation next week, away from computers, so I'll try to wrap this puppy up and resubmit by tomorrow night! |

Yeah, I'm sure, but to be EXTRA sure, I resubmitted just now. I changed the zip filename to not have spaces in it, as I think that's preferred on the back end, yeah? If there's a short filename naming convention you'd like me to follow, let me know. I tend to prefer long, descriptive filenames. |
