Post subject:  Question for seasoned TLX kitbashers and WWG texture makers
I'd like to be a good doobie and provide kitbashed tiles in all of the various grid formats. I'm working on a couple Hinterland Forests tiles where I'm massaging the rivers into different paths. It's relatively easy to make a gridless tile that I like, but I'm not sure how to go about getting a nice looking "hidden" grid on top of it. Any ideas?

My current strategy has been to create a dirt + shape based on textures from one of the Forests tiles that has a large open patch of dirt. Here's a sample of what that ends up looking like:

Is there a better way? I tried cloning some grid lines from other textures, but it's tedious and really is a mixed bag in terms of quality. At least laying down these + markers is fast. If it's good enough for kitbashes, I can stick with it. If I can be taught to make them better, please help!

One thing I may try is to vary them a little more... make some edges longer, make some much shorter... I'm not so good with brushes, but I can try making the grid lines really solid on their own layer, then go back and erase them until they blend in better, which would allow the grass to maybe blend in better...

This is one reason that I stick to modern. ;)

It really depends on how 'hidden' you want the lines, and if you want them to be terrain features or a gaming grid. If the latter, simply choose the darkest color you can from the dominant terrain (so a deep green in this case) and draw a 2px thick line over that terrain.

Otherwise, for the grass, find a nice slip of darker grass or other natural texture that blends fairly well. Make that slip into a PS layer and then copy the layer down the line as much as you need. (In this case, use the lasso tool to grab a darker clump fro the center tile and use it to make your new line.)

You could also go "Oubliette of peril" style, and just add a small rock at each grid intersection... You should change the rock at each intersection (either a new rock, or a rotated one) to avoid being too obvious...

I actually did something like this for the edge of town kitbash as well as some other other personal kit bashes that I don't think I ever submitted for public consumption.


I don't have access to my kit bash computer right now but I remember creating a layer with all mud in it then setting the layer mask to make it invisible. Then I just colored in parts of the grid on the layer mask in make the grid visible where it seemed appropriate.

A few comments to make this fit with Matt's style.
First as he said make the lines irregular. I did this by using a soft brush with lots of jitter on the layer map and really only coloring in the spots that made sense given the tile I was working with. Vary the opacity of the brush and you can have endless variations on the line on the ground.

Second Matt's tiles had large gaps in the grid lines, so he would often skip up to half of the line on the tile. If you want it to match up try to add lines slowly a chunk here and there untill you eyes begin to see the grid but don't overdo it. You will find that 50 to 60% of lines are all you need if you make sure there is something different to mark the intersection points (end of line some cross, an odd rock or flower, etc.)

Finally I hope you realize layers are very useful for this. Not only do they let you keep all versions of the tile in your same file. But they allow you to copy the grid to a new tile and have a good starting point for the next grid work you are doing. Often I find that the copy of a grid on a new tile will only need some minor tweaks once the master grid is set up....

Thanks everyone for pitching in with advice. I still haven't made any grid lines that I'm happy with. I really like the lines on the Hinterland Forests TLX tiles, and will continue to try to emulate that style.

I am making heavy use of layers, and find myself quickly running out of dropbox space, as each GIMP file tends to approach 1/3 gig each... :) Thankfully, I've got a beefy home computer, and an almost as beefy work computer that can cope with these kitbashes OK! My old computer only had 1 gig of memory, and wouldn't let me do much of anything.

My current plan of attack is this:

First, I've created a dirt layer using one of the Hinterland Forests tiles. I'm going to use this to clone a solid set of grid lines into another layer. I'm going to use a much wider brush than I tried before. I think I had a 10px brush, but I think the Forests grids are closer to 20px. With the grid layer in place, I'll start erasing the lines by using another Forests tile as a guide. I'll go back over the lines as much as necessary to try to add a little wiggle to them, taper them, whatever.

With any luck, I'll be left with a reusable grid that I can copy onto many of the other tiles. It's not something I want to be doing a lot of... ;)

I am predicting a hectic work week, but I find I'm able to work on this stuff while waiting for my compiler to do *its* job, or waiting for tests to run... I'll post pics as I make progress.
