Looking great! And these pillars will be great props as well. If you do that with the doubles, do you not think the assembly will be tricky? I think the current config is perfect.

Well, I don't think it'd be tricky, but I won't know until I try. Cutting the slots out is a lot like cutting them out of posts - I don't mind doing some test cuts to see if it produces a better result.

I may be picturing this wrong, but I see the first three going together fine and the fourth side being a pain.

I like where you've got to with those posts - and the walls are great.

Well, as it turns out, I was NOT elected president of the United States via a totally unmotivated write in campaign. I didn't even write myself in, so I suspected it wouldn't turn out in my favor. The bright side is my papercrafting hobby remains intact.

No new pics to share, but I've printed a couple gridless tiles to let me build stuff on (though I haven't tried to clean them up as proper TLX tiles...), and I have almost finished a first attempt at some stairs. Looking at the textures available to me, I went with just stone stairs. The original set also had some stairs with a painting on the stone wall texture, but I think it may be more trouble than it's worth.

My son and I occasionally play 4e, but we only very loosely use the rules. It's more a chance for him to do roleplaying, and for me to spend time with him. Keeping in mind the amount of reality bending a 10 year old is willing to do, our characters recently snuck onto a pirate ship (he really wanted to use the Maiden, can you blame him?) and we managed to take the ship while keeping enough crew alive to limp along. I occasionally remind my son that our characters are slowly running out of rum, so the thrill of the ship is wearing thin, and we need to find land. That's where Atlantis will come in.

I am hoping to have a couple paths my son can pick from. Most will lead the ship to wreck, and we'll wash ashore on a beach. One might let us spot the city rising up from the water, and it'll likely end up with The Maiden making a grand introduction by accidentally plowing through some of the walkways and starting us off generally on the wrong foot. My son thought it'd be cool if the set were used to represent a desert-bound city where the inhabitants attempted to erect a temple to pray for water, so we might actually start out in a port city and head out into a desert to make use of the set. The possibilities are endless!

Them walkways is purty.

I have watched kids take some models and make up there own game. It is fascinating how they come up with their own set of rules and actions and stick to them.

My 12 & 9 (nearly 10) year olds roleplay with me & each other. Interestingly, when they play as just them, they seem to be more interested in having squads of people rather than just 1 character.

I was hoping to have a more fun post tonight, but my robocutter has been giving me pains! I managed to get one set of stairs assembled to see how it looks. (as we say in my office, "it doesn't suck out loud".) I also cut a second series of supports - this time the double-column supports have a stone wall between them, cutting (see what I did there?) the time to cut and edge them in half. I like having the option to pick either style.

I was hoping to have cut and assembled the six types of 3" walls I've done, and try a setup with 3-way and 4-way posts, but those will have to wait for another night!

Man, converting these roofs is taking a long time! I've pretty much let everything else get put on hold while I work my way through the pieces, and I think the results will be worth it. I'm making tiny bits of progress each night, where "tiny" equates to maybe prepping a couple pages of templates that I hadn't done before (you know - removing textures from other sets so I have something to work on) or getting a page or two of textures redone. In real-world time, that could translate to 3 weeks just for the trusses alone! I won't underestimate the time it takes to do a full TLX roof conversion again!

That said, I continue to push forward. I've fiddled enough with the exterior roof textures and the trusses that the textures line up pretty nicely. I've still got four pages of trusses to do, but really if I can get a full night without distraction, those will work themselves out.

I tried a little build with my kids to see how things would look. Visually, I like it a lot. Unfortunately, the standees I printed out were at the wrong scale, and so the little build was VERY cramped. Also, the walkways may turn out to be too wobbly to use as-is, but that might be because I had no mechanism for joining them together. I will try a system to let me join them to each other, and also to join them to arbitrary positions on tiles.

I'm turning a negative into a positive. My team at work has had to do overnights to support some efforts in a distant time zone, and tonight is my night to stay up and pray the phone doesn't ring... So, I'm going to try to regain a little momentum.

I am hoping to tackle all of the walkways tonight (at least in 1" format first), and doing that means rigging up all the railings I want, and solving the stability problem I had when just resting them on my little plug-and-play pillars. On the topic of stability, I went back to Lair of the Dragon God and whipped up some catwalk supports based on it. Here's what things might look like:





I have my preference already, but if anyone wants to add their 2¢, you're more than welcome.

For those who've never used these pieces before, it's kinda like a wall piece that's been scored in three places. The ends of this wall slot into a single 2-way post, so you end up with a 1" square post on which the walkway piece rests. The ends of the walkway pieces have this flap that slots into these square posts, so it should hold them in place pretty well.

Seeing as it's now 6:30pm in Australia and my company phone has not rung once, I'm gonna call it a day. The 1" grid walkways are just about done. I have railings that fit them all, and I'll float some pictures around to see what y'all think.

Whaddya think? Is it too subtle? Not subtle enough in places?

I see it and get it, but I prefer ultra subtle or gridless in natural environments anyways.

It may be too vague for some.

EDIT: Perhaps, like many beaches, subtle sand/seaweed "lines" where the water has reached/receded from?

I don't know how many inches I'm looking at. I guess that means it is too subtle for me.

Fair enough. I wanted to avoid overwhelming the tile with a blatant grid of stuff. Here's another attempt, this time adding some smudges along the grid lines. Maybe that helps a little?



I can keep poking at the lines to make them a little more ragged, and maybe add some/remove some to fix spots where maybe the grid isn't quite there enough.

Personally, I like the really subtle lines. I printed all of the original Atlantis tiles gridless, and my 8 and 11 year olds were still able to break them down into 6x6 grids well enough. I can take a stab at using the pebble areas to define the grid lines a-la Hinterland, but when I started down that route, the clumps stood out too much for my taste.

I could go both ways, and make a set with a fairly "hidden" grid, and one with a fairly obvious semi-transparent grid overlaid on the tiles. Sure wouldn't take much additional effort, but it would make for a lot of pdfs...

For now, I'm going to focus on whipping up some of the marble floors because there's not much fighting I'll have to do with THOSE grids Well, except for a gridless version, which'll take some time. Maybe that'll buy some time for more people to get a chance to voice their own preferences.

This is my least favorite of them all. I definitely understand the need for a usable grid, but the last two versions were good in my book.
