After a long, miserable period at work, I'm now free to focus on this stuff 'til the end of the year. My wife is even OK with me wasting *most* of my time doing papercrafting related stuff, at least for this week since the kids are still in school.

We had started an encounter on some test build I did, and I rebuilt it with actual TLX tiles and catwalk supports, and it worked out really well:

Image

The roofs look pretty nice now, and I have new textures on the insides of the roofs that look pretty good.

Image

I really want 2" wide catwalks, as 1" wide looks pretty but doesn't play all that well.

Image

The kids stopped the ritual, but now are stuck babysitting the two prisoners that were supposed to have been killed by the fishy guys.

So, I'm focusing all my attention on all the loose ends I've created with my Atlantis conversion. I've got 5 solid days to work, so hopefully I'll cover some serious ground. Speaking of ground... I'm going to try to redo all of the tile textures that use sand. The sand from the original set was very directional, and even with just 6 tiles on the table, it was very jarring to see. It's looking like there'll be upwards of a dozen different tile textures to do. I'll probably trim a couple out and pitch them as a booster of some sort.

I'll post some updates pretty regularly this week, showing off the different types of pieces as they are completed.

The TLX planner is a really cool tool for double-checking the tiles. The sand texture is OK now, but I might spend some time trying to make the water "tileable". Here's an example layout:

Honestly, it's not any worse than the original set, but still I'll see if I can't make it blend a *little* better.

I feel bad that I haven't done more. I really want to get a chunk of stuff packaged up and off to the kitbash folks, at least to have some eyes look over the files and point out any flaws. I've done and redone pieces so many times - it's hard to do a conversion that does the originals justice!

I have the tiles all exported. I have the posts (regular, angled and 2-story) done and exported. I have all the walls (regular, not angled or 2-story) exported. I've got the roofs about 80% done, and would have finished tonight, but I pushed myself a little too hard at tonight's karate class, and really didn't have the energy afterwards to do much. I need to go back over the roofs and do a more consistent job with texturing the inside area -- make sure all the textures line up from piece to piece. It's a grind.

Tomorrow, I hope to get the roofs completed along with all the trusses. Then I'll take the original props and re-lay them out so they work with cutfiles. Hopefully by the end of the week, I'll have been able to polish off the 1.5" catwalks. At that point, I think I'll have enough to pass along to some kitbash reviewers for comment.

I'm not taking time out to build because I want to wrap up pieces. For sure, though, when the catwalks are ready, I'll want to build some elevated buildings. They're fun!

Post subject:  Re: LOVE the Atlantis set... Need it in TLX format!

This morning, I managed to fix up most of the roofs so the textures line up correctly, and I completed the trusses. I had the trusses 2/3 completed, and since the 1-way truss textures can come from the end trusses very easily, this went pretty quickly. I *am* able to make every silly mistake possible, though. I imagine if I didn't constantly copy from the wrong layer, paste to the wrong layer, scale to the wrong dimensions etc etc this would go a bit faster. I do like how the trusses came out though - I tried to make custom exterior walls by piecing together textures from the original set.

So, I'm "on schedule" to build the props. Assuming this goes well, I *will* get some pictures with props in them!

Props went smoothly. I'm not sure I care for the scale of some of the props, but I'll wait and see how things look when I've got a complete build. I'm also debating whether the benches would work better as a two-piece setup - a solid box top and a smaller solid box base, both with marble texture on em. I'm not a fan of 2" of black.

Here are some quick shots from my desk - I keep a couple tiles sitting around so when I complete a prop I can put it somewhere to snap a shot. The paper standees are not part of the set - they came from a free collection from the Cardboard Warriors forum.

Despite all my interruptions today, I've managed to make cutfiles for all the props, run all the pages through the cutter, edge and glue all the props. Phew. That big statue is hugemongous. I'm thinking I'll make a much smaller version of the trident idol as a table-top prop...

So, I think tomorrow I'm on track to try to make some more catwalk and platform pieces, and then I need to double-check to see what I'm missing!

EDIT: Sweet! I think the 1" catwalks are *done*, and I have a tiny start on the 1.5" catwalks. I fear my free time will be getting shorter and shorter as my staycation wears on, so I think rather than finish up the 1.5" stuff, I'll package up what I've done and make it available for reviewers to look over.

Post subject:  Re: LOVE the Atlantis set... Need it in TLX format!

I managed to get sick just in time for the xmas parties, which is kinda typical for me. I'm just about over it now, though, so I'm back to hacking up textures!

The 1.5" walkways are now done, I think. I need to do up some new cutfiles for them, and along with that I really need to do some test builds of all the catwalk pieces to make sure I've got things lined up just right.

The things I have left on my plate are now fairly minor things, so I *might* start having fun with some pieces. I recently picked up 100 sheets of matte photo paper free after rebate from Staples, and *sigh* the printouts look frickin great. So, I'll probably redo all the pieces I've made so far before I snap any complete builds. Certainly I have to redo the tiles. The water color is totally incompatible between the photo and non-photo prints. The photo prints actually look like what's on the screen!

Quickie update... still plugging away at this. I've got all the walkways done, and all the necessary railings, I think.

I'm finishing up 2-story walls today, and having some fun trying my hand at adding some new details. One thing the original Atlantis set did not have is doors...

Anyone who hasn't tried to do justice to a complete conversion... Wow, it's a lot of work!

I'm in the home stretch now, and with the upcoming Staples deal on matte photo paper, this'll be the first set I print out at photo quality. I still have cutfiles to make and a couple pieces I discovered I missed, but the todo list is VERY short now.

What have I learned? If I push myself, neglect my family a bit more than usual, and take a week of vacation from work, it still takes over 2 months for me to "completely" convert an old set to TLX format...

mproteau, I'm not sure why you guys do all the work you do and put yourselves through all that you do, but I am grateful. Thanks.

Thank you so much, folks behind the scenes, for letting this see the light of day. This represented a LOT of work, and I really tried to blend the spirit of the original set with the format of TLX, while maintaining something that was production quality. I really hope people can get some use out of it!

I've just started building a TLX version to experiment with some posts that don't attach to floor tabs, as the floor tabs are what turn me off of TLX. The cut-files work great and these pieces go together easy. :)

Yay! This made my day (or, since it's early, it's shaping up to be the highlight of my day ;) )
