A simple 2" strip of cardstock sandwich glued underneath would strengthen the whole thing, too. And the icicle score and 90 degree bend should get rid of any bowing.

Yeah, but I was trying to keep it semi-transparent (always more fun if you can see the chasm beneath you feet!), and without any sharp edges to resemble a more natural formation.


Sigh. Wish i could try some of these ideas myself. I have to confess that I'm largely living vicariously through you guys. Due to a combination of factors, I haven't been able to do *any* folding for well over half a year now. (Heck, I don't even have a real table for now...)

The sandwich looks much better, the differences between the two halves adds a sense of depth to the printing.

So, I've got to try some double-stick tape to see if it'll work okay. I sure hope so, since I'm not too thrilled with the cardstock "U" frame. It works fine, but it could certainly look better.

One benefit of the double-stick tape is that you can cut it into nice neat slivers while the backing's still on: this might help? Picky, pickin' the back off, tho'.

When I played around with plasticard there was a special glue used for it. To put it simply it "bonded" the two pieces of plastic by slightly melting them together.

You could try this on the edges of your transparencies.

No guarantees and unfortunately I can't remember the name of the glue. You should be able to find it at hobby stores or stores that sell toy trains and terrain.

Games Workshop sells a "Plastic Glue" that works just like you describe. Could someone who has some of this stuff do a quick test on a scrap of transparency, and tell us if it still looks transparent after the fact?

I don't have a scrap, Aleph, but if it's a plastic Liquid Poly works on, it will fog where it's over used - that's the nature of the beast. But could this *frosting* not be used to creative advantage? Buy a pot, Aleph; it's worth the experiment - you can always use it on plastic minis.

Guys i used to own a miniature store (no not a really small store ;p ) and i had the entire games workshop range. from that time i still have loads of stuff left including the glue you talk about.

This evening i will test it on some transparancy's to see.

I remember that the glue did kind of melt the plastic to create a bond and that the clear canopy for example of the eldar wave serpent did go misty from the glue.

But i will get back with the results..

If the glue is applied only to the edges of the transparencies the fogging might be minimal.

By the way, that fogging will occur with any glue that releases fumes during its curing.

Cyanoachrilate(sic) [Crazy Glue, Zap-A-Gap, etc.] does the same thing to clear plastics. I used to cover the clear plastic pieces with "Elmer's Glue All" when I was painting, gluing and then "dull-coating" a model. After all that was done you could peel the "Elmer's Glue All" and the clear plastic remained clear.

Art Stores do a white Masking Fluid, sort of rubberised, that does a similar thing but it does ruin good brushes. Really, its not that hard to apply MEK-Pak or Humbrol Liquid Poly with a brush, minimally. I've done it for sensitive model canopies and such with no trouble. So long as the plastic is not polythene - which it isn't likely to be it, it should be OK as an adhesive. And as I said, the *frosting* effect could be used creatively, around the edges to give a 'deeper ice' effect which could be cool. (no pun) No doubt Longreach'll tell.

I think a "misty" or "frosty" effect would be preferable to having the while cardstock "U" frame showing through! As long as it can be limited to the very edges, anyway.

okay guys the liquid plastic glue from games workshop indeed fogs the plastic but if you take a bigger piece of plastic this can be avoided i think. the problem is that in my case (but this could be because the glue is pretty old by now) the glue did not really stick good to the paper. It may seem that this is perfect plastic to plasic glue but plastic to someting else is something else.

The fogging could indeed be used for cool fogging and icing effects. the idea sprung in my mind to fog some windows in the pub on a cold winternight like in icecrystal kind of idea around the edges of only bottem and left for instance as if it started collecting some snow.

Howabout a sheet of transparency in a sandwich fold?

OK. It will not glue plastic to card. You'd need a quick epoxy for that, and even then, the plastic would be best abraded to give it some "tooth".

Otherwise, longreach, I'm pleased someone know's where I'm coming from! You sound like my kind of modeller*. I'd love to see some of your stuff...

Figuring out how to carry that paper sharn on my back during the trip is the real challenge.

I read something about waxpaper on the forum but i guess thats streatching it's abilities a bit hahahahahha.

Aleph13 Let me experiment some more with the glue this weekend maybe i can figure something out.

I have not started using trancparencies yet but i definetly want to incorporate them in my pieces so lets see what happends with the other glue kinds. ( will try the sandwich thing you suggested)
