Well I found I do have a photo editing program that has similar settings to the ones you mentioned, so I was able to get a decent ice cave effect. Not as fancy as photoshop, but I'm probably going to butcher these first ones anyway. Thanks for the help.

So...anyone other than me thinking this would look even better printed on transparency paper? Give it even more of an ice look. I bought a 30 pack cheap to print out the crystals and such from Caveworks as well as some of the moat and well inserts from other sets. What do you think?

Transparancies would be craziness! But hell on earth to assemble a whole dungeon out of.

What a sweet idea! Maybe, to avoid having to make everything out of transparencies, just layer some of the stalagmite and stalactite transparency printouts over the Ice Cave walls?

yeah, I'm not sure about scoring, folding, and glueing transpariencies to make walls. the stalagmite suggestion sounded good though.

Hm. This talk about snow spray gives me an idea...

Get some white spray paint, and lightly dust the back of the transparencies after printing. That way, you should get a more opaque quality to the walls, rather than them being transparent. It'll also give more depth to the texture. And heck, the colors should come out more like you expect them to as well, because the areas that are white in the design will actually turn out white, rather than clear transparent.

Seriously, though, wouldn't the spray snow contain way too much moisture, and just end up warping the cardstock?

Spray some of that protective plastic spray on the models and then you can use real snow. Of course it would be way out of scale, giant snowflakes and all. Maybe some of that snow fluff and snowy confetti; put a little glue in some spots, sprinkle, and presto! instant snow coverage.

So...since I should be getting my new printer on monday...some thoughts. Since the transparency would be a tad flimsy have two thoughts. First is to use 2 sheets for each wall and offset them by 1/4 inch or less. This will serve to add strength and to further add to illusion of ice and depth. My second idea is to have the bottoms of the walls be paper and have them be like an anchor, but not quite sure how to set that up. Any thoughts or comments welcome! Should have something done (wall or two at least) in a week or so, work and teaching permitting!

Okay. What am I doing wrong? I used the same section that Denny did, so there shouldn't be an issue with me posting a detailed pic.

I followed Denny's instructions to the letter (3 times, just in case), and mine comes out far more turqouise.

His is far more blue, and more vibrant than Denny's, too. I can't imagine that the same instructions would give such drastically different results on three different machines.

Any clues?

I'm not sure I didn't post a mod that deviated from Denny's instructions to give a result that pleased me more. I couldn't get the same result as Denny by following his instructions to the letter either.

trying shifting your hue a few points in either direction, see if you like the color better. also, add a little more brightness and experiment with your contrast settings.

Man those are really cool. Everytime I see those, I'm really tempted to put together an ice caves adventure.


Edit: Play with the settings some. I got a nice, vibrant, dark blue by setting the Hue at 220, Saturation at 55 and Lightness at -5, then setting the Brightness at 4 and Contract at 15% (this in Paint Shop Pro).

Well, once I can make 'em more, you know, ice-y , I'm planning to use my Asteroid Base kitbash on it to start doing the Hoth base.

If someone can figure out exactly what to do and post an action, I'd be very grateful!

I was shooting for deep blue.

Here is a whiter, more icy version. The settings for this were Hue 220, Saturation 45, Lightness 65 / Brightness 4 Contrast 15%.

*shock and horrors, can't believe I'm reading this* Tsk tsk tsk. That would be piracy. You should know better than to ask for that, Conaill, you've been here long enough. Splurge on a copy (twelve bucks), make Denny a rich man, and you'll have all the textures you want to play with.

Oh come off it, johnnygs. I'm just asking someone to post a 1-inch section of wall, so I can help out some of the people who've had trouble replicating Denny's results. Nobody - including yourself - seemed to mind when EbbTide first posted that very same section of texture all the way back on page 1.

Well, Robby's fix has done it for my needs, actually. I played with it for a while, and I finally settled on a solution that I was very happy with. I compared it with Robby's, and they were almost identical!

So, I just need opinions as to how much of the texture should be icy. (This image should be small enough to banish any concerns of piracy )



Which of the three do you think looks best? And that aside, which do you think would suit a Hoth base best?

I kinda like the third, "frosted over" look for the door, but it seems a shame to wash out that much of the cool textures. Doesn't really stand out enough against the cave walls either. Maybe you could try a partially-frosted look by overlaying the icy version of the door and varying the transparency semi-randomly?
