I’ve been documenting my playthrough of Goodman Game’s adventure (complete with papercraft terrain, including a lot of WWG props and TerraClips) at http://www.goodman-games.com/forums/vie ... 61&t=44169 Twice during the game, my players visited a location mentioned briefly in the adventure (and support materials): Windgate Estate. Because these were purely role-playing/plot encounters and there was no supplied map, I used a major-brand set of dungeon tiles I had handy for a map-only version of the grounds and first floor of the manor house: Take note of those ¾ towers in the corners, and the staircase location in one of them. As the players became increasingly engaged with the social part of the plot, I decided that the stock “slay the necromancer in her lair” ending was way too tired and weak for how invested they’d become in the murder-mystery plot driving the motivation of the villain. So I created a final encounter at Windgate that would be epic – she had a means of escape, so there would be a final confrontation between the screwed up members of this noble family-with-a-dark-secret. Here’s a teaser shot of round two of the finale (again, see in the next few days for a blow-by-blow and lots more pictures, including the multiple layers of the Manor House): I had at least 50 plastic and paper minis on the board (I lost count…) I built the manor house out of Terraclips, and (for the floors). Since the players had been to this location twice before and even had a meeting with their client in one of the ¾ corner towers, I wanted to build those out so they would recognize it immediately. This is my result: I built it with paperboard and adhesive paper, and some scans from my TerraClips sets… (I ended up changing the fold pattern to be outward to link to adjacent walls, instead of folding in on itself, like in this prototype. This is here to show the thickness of the paperboard I used for this kitbash.) Mounted on Mattboard - same thickness as Terraclip tiles. The end-clipping that worked best for me... Last night, I happened to be asked to test-build an upcoming staircase from Kev’s Lounge that turns out to fit this kitbash perfectly, allowing me to remove the curve-clip (and instead clip the ends to the floor. If I’d only had that a few days before my finale! As it was, here’s a shot of the final confrontation at the staircase as it happened… Still, very exciting and satisfying. So, so cool. I love how you translated a 2-D map into a fully-realized 3-D terrain build. Very creative. Thanks for sharing this! |
