For the life of me, I can't find who posted this idea originally, though it was within the past two days. I'd love to give 'em credit.

Anyway, here's the jist: the goal is to make a more three-dimensional bar (as a start to other items, I'm sure!). To do so, the graphics of the bottles & shelves would be moved back into the model, giving an actual depth to the model. In addition, there would ideally be transparencies used for glass doors.

I've managed to mod the Photoshop file to have one "frame" of the bar, and two "inserts" of the two different bottle graphics.

Not too tough, but I am having difficulty with the logistics of shelves and bottles.

The best solution I can muster is to have the bottles themselves on a sheet of transparency paper, and mount it halfway into the model. That way, it'll almost look as though the bottles in back are a reflection from a mirror. (If you ignore the placement of overlapping bottles, that is)

Also, I can't quite decide what to do about doors. It'll be fine without, I suppose, since not many bars have doors anyway, but it might be nice for something. Since solid glass doors aren't very realistic in a fantasy setting, I'd need a frame for the doors to sit in, and swing out with. (The door frame would be on cardstock)

Ideas?

Hmmm... This might be a cool addition to the early sets in the way that Denny added 3 variations of complexity to certain parts of CWU.

I can think of a few simple(r) ways of achieving depth without a major
design change to the Shelves that contain the bottles and such from Pubs and Inns.

My first suggestion would be to mask the framework and shelves and remove the interior parts. Then print out the frame/shevles cut and glue them to a thick piece of card (say 2-3mm) then glue them to the completed shelf. This would give the impression that the bottles are set back on the shelves. And you could stick a few of your bottle "flats" in between the new facade.

A more complicated route would be a redesign (atleast of the front/interior) part of the shelf to add a recessed area. I think it could be accomplished utilizing the technique that adds the recess for the firepit part in the fireplace. Then using the method above for printing the outter framework and shelf edge for the front facade. Would add even more depth while helping regain some of the lost rigidity.

I think with your "mirrored" backdrop this would like quite good. And quite achievable with a bit of work.

I don't see a need for cupboard doors. But that would be an interesting concept. I've done some simple hinged compartments for my (40k) tanks. It used small inkpen tubes for the moving part of the hinges. While a straightened paperclip was usedfor the shaft. Pieces of card were then fashioned into "L" shapes and super glued to the pentube shaft and compartment lids. This method worked well, and it has lasted 7 for years of use. The only problem I see, is that since the doors are hanging vertically and you don't have gravity to keep it closed, how will you make sure they don't keep swinging open? A latch over the handles? A small magnet and metal sheet?

(I hope some of that made some sense...)

I like the idea of the ink tube and the paperclip, but it might be a bit too big for a liquor cabinet door. I'll probably just do the "mirror" effect with the transparency, and hold off on any doors. If there's ever a need for cabinet with locked doors, it'll probably be super high priced liquor, and have solid wood doors anyway. Who knows?

Okay! Here's the finalized instructions on how to build a proper 3D Liquor Cabinet from Pubs & Inns! (whipped this together in short order. I can't imagine why it takes Denny & Paul so long... Just kidding, guys!)

Step 1: Photoshop

- White out the inside of the cabinet frame, where the liquor bottles are. This will be cut out later.
- Take the graphics of the bottles, and stretch it to a size that will fill the entire back of the cabinet.
- Take the graphics of the cabinet itself, and surround the bottle graphic to make the inside of the cabinet look proper. This will create an "insert" that will go inside the cabinet.

Later pics will help you visualize this step.

Step 2: Print, Cut, Score, Fold, and Edge

- Cut and score as shown below, paying careful attention to the reverse scoring of the bottle shelf "insert."



Step 3: Glue!

- Place the bottle grahic "insert" as shown in these two shots, gluing the two side flaps to the inside of the cabinet.





- Align the transparency of the bottle graphic inside, as shown, and realize that it really looks like crap.



Step 4: Throw Away the Transparency

- Unless you've got a backlight for this one, it's just too dark to look good at all. Toss it.

Step 5: Continue Gluing

- Glue the final flaps into place, and you'll have a great looking cabinet! Here's some shots inside:

All I can say is that this is great! I love it when people use Photoshop or other methods to mod and kitbash. Nice job! Would you consider sending your mod to Denny so he can make it available if he wants? People would love it.

Thing is, I've offered to send everything I've modded in PS, but still no word from Denny. I know he's busy right now, and he'll likely want to have the WW store set up with a ModWorks section first.

That's what I keep telling myself, anyway.

As far as I'm concerned, the things I make are for the betterment of everyone in the WW community. If someone's purchased a set, they should have access to the mods, too. I can't wait 'til this is a reality (like video game mods and skins)!

Good idea with the light. I'll have to figure out what I'm gonna do about lighting, but the first set to get that treatment will likely be First Light. (Oh, God. Sorry 'bout the pun)

Shelves would have been a perfect addition to the transparency idea, since it could go all the way through. Since that didn't work at all (yet!), I felt the shelves would look a little too "sticky-outy" and detract from the bottles.

Actually, my camera is crap. I just take a few extra shots, and end up using one or two. The only saving grace of this camera is that it has a (limited but functional) macro feature.

My wife's camera is spectacular, but she needs it for her work (she's a tattooist).

Actually, my buddy just got a camera with a macro feature that's a bit better than mine (but smaller!) for about $150 at Best Buy. I seem to remember The Auld Grump saying something about nothing decent being available for under $200. Maybe that could change his mind?

Stupidly easy answer: LED + Watch Battery = Done.

Just make sure that your LED and battery match up for power.

The Auld Grump - I did the back lights for some old plastic terminators that way.

You can find cheapo led flashlights at Target (and a thousand other places, I'm sure) that would work well, too. That way, you wouldn't have to rig up contact points, etc., you could just canniblaize them.
