How are you going to do the masts? |

Two months for more progress? You'd think I was busy, or something! ![]() I had some time today to devote to the PotSMaiden, so here goes: This one shows almost all of the necessary whitespace removed (I didn't catch the rest of it until after some gluing... This one shows where you need to score (and again, I forgot one until later) This shot shows just what an anal-retentive kinda guy I can be. ![]() The three arrows are pointing to the microscopic reverse-scored tabs. One side done, with a bit too much glue. It was able to be wiped out, though (mostly). I started with the side of the hull first, and I'll add the front later. Since the side hull is all one piece, it has the most stability. Here's the outside of the other side, after gluing, to show how well the scoring and tiny little tabs still work, even at that size. Sides and back done! |

No, I mean have the entire hull be one piece, without any tabs needed to connect the various hull pieces together. It would mean separating all the sandwich folds, joining all the inner hull pieces together so they form one continuous strip of paper, same with the outer hull pieces, and then making one BIG sandwich fold of the whole thing. If you keep the rearhull attached to the deck, then the only tabs you'll need are one each to connect the side hulls to the deck (large tab, glued to the bottom of the deck), plus one small tab to close the front hull. Three tabs total, versus something like 7 tiny tabs in your layout. Edit: Damn, now you got me going too. I'm going to have to give this a try as well. Think we can get it down to a 1" Maiden? ![]() |

Way more work than I would try for my Pirates collection. I would simply copy their method, left hull, right hull, deck(s) and sails. then you could paste it on matboard, comparable to their plastic card, I would guess. Your Maiden would simply shame all my other ships ![]() |

OK, now you've done it... I just printed my first 4" Maiden trial-run. Well, it's actually a 2" Maiden printed out at double size, but who's gonna tell? ![]() I decided to kitbash a simplified Maiden that would be much easier to assemble than Aleph's "just shrink everything down" version. That means I reassembled every single piece of the Maiden, joined as many tabs together on the computer as possible, and eliminated some details that would only cause nightmares at the scale we're working with here. Right now, the entire body of the ship is one continuous strip of paper! ![]() Still need to finetune a bit before I can show you some pictures. Need to add tabs, for one. Also haven't found a good solution for the sterncastle stairs yet. I may just make it a diagonal ramp with a stair texture... *much* easier to build, and it's not as if we're aiming for maximum playability of the stairs here. (Unless you want to populate your MiniMaiden with grains of rice... might be nice for a ghost ship: a grain of rice would be about the right size for a "ghost" miniature at this scale! ![]() More to come... probably this weekend. It's all Aleph's fault! ![]() |

The ... my second prototype is completed, and it ain't looking half bad! Still a little rough... I didn't bother to edge anything, and I cut some of the details a little roughly on purpose, just to see how much I can get away with. The build itself only took a bit under an hour, including figuring out how to best put it together. That's probably setting a record for putting together a Maiden ![]() ![]() I've printed her out at 1/10th scale of the original Maiden for now, so 2.8". Toothpicks are just about the right size for masts at this scale. My aim is to get a design that's still feasible at half that size. For now, this is printed on regular paper, so I don't have to worry about thickness too much. I will probably switch to cardstock to get a slightly sturdier build. I'm already thinking about what changes to make for Mark III. If all goes well, that'll be the last prototype. Meanwhile, |

Impossible ! Incredible !! Now I need a copy for each of my PotSM ships ![]() ![]() Repairs of orginals may be fruitless if I need to bend across the repairs again. Best thought now is to copy onto cardstock and try to replace the plastic, maybe, hopefully... |
