How *do* you kitbash?
I was looking for info on kit bashing cuz im having problems with Andorax's
info my size comes out wrong on printing need a magnafing glass to see it
i use photoshop 7 got it off ebay for $50:00 but all i find here fighting over what program is better, NOT how to copy then paste do the changes save and print ONLY 2 post has info on bashing
I am by no means an expert, so this is worth maybe a nickle.
First, I followed Mel's advice above. It worked perfectly. Using the photo snapshot tool in Adobe I was able to click-drag around an entire page of stuff (or a single element if that's all you need) and that snaps the piccy.
Then, I head to ... Paint. Nothing fancy, and it's free with Windows. Now I paste the image into paint, and it pastes in HUGE (because of the default dpi for Paint). I leave it huge, makes it easier to see the fine details.
Now, in paint, I can do lots of simple things. A recent item was to take the new roof from Mayhem Industrial - the black tarpaper roof with vents - and remove the vents. I wanted a roof that would be "flat" so I could have a ladder go to the top of the roof, and it could be used to store crates and boxes and drums and such. Vents would be in the way.
I'm not going to describe how I grabbed bits of nearby texture and worked them over the existing vent spots. But I did this, taking pains to get the blend of textures correct. I then save this image - which saves it as a bmp.
But the size is going to be off because I use Paint. So my next step is to use a program that allows for the easy resizing of images. I use MS Publisher. I have a template set-up with the kitbash logo already there, and I've already set the margins to the requirements. Obviously if this was just for myself I don't need those.
Then I import the new roof, and BAM! It's huge in Publisher (it imports at something like 19" x 13" or some such nonsense). Then I simply select the image and resize - in this case I say to make it 7" square. And BINGO! I now have a perfect 7" square roof. Position it on the page properly, save and exit. I then turn it into a pdf and submit it to Aubrey.
That's a simple explanation. It get's much rougher when you are taking several textures from several different pieces, and combining them into one. But again, I grab the various bits, import into Paint, play with them, save them, and when all the bits are done, I use Publisher to bring those elements together and resize.
Something I just did which was accepted as a kitbash was the ramp from the new Mayhem Industrial in 1.5" form. The kit itself comes with a ramp using a 1.5" grid, but it was overlaid on top of the shape, which was 7" long and 3" wide. That made for 4 squares on top with little .5" slivers of unusable space on the ends. Plus the ramp was centered on the raised area, and that also meant there were partial 1.5" squares for the ramp.
What some "true" 1.5" gamers wanted was a ramp piece that was 7.5" long and 3" wide with all squares fully usable, no slivers of wasted space to throw off movement or range calculations.
I did two versions, one kept the ramp at 3" but offset it so all the squares were full 1.5", and one where I centered a larger ramp, again making all the squares 1.5" and fully usable.
I couldn't just take the existing ramp piece and enlarge it a little. Nope, I ended up grabbing pieces of the original, enlarging them individually, blending any textures necessary, then piecing it all back together in Publisher, and then finally overlaying a grid. When printed out, it takes two pages to make one ramp. But those pages are actually a top end, bottom end, back end, ramp, sides, and a grid, joined to form what looks like two single images, the main piece, and the back/ramp piece.
Of course, Paint won't work for everything. I may need some powerful blending or smudging tools. Or what if I wanted to ADD a new kind of roof vent. Then first I need to get a vent texture, and probably then use Photoshop so I can save the image as a transparent image. It's not complicated, and you end up with a graphics bit that you can position over anything else, and the background will show through the unused portions of the graphic (so a square graphic of a round vent wont leave you with white space filling the square).
Now, was that even close to anything you were looking for?
