Recently, my DM finally gave me a bit of advance warning for a terrain setup he needed! Okay, so it was 2 days notice... and he wanted lava. Lots and lots of lava! So, tasked with making a ton of lava, I envisioned a cracked and torn landscape, with lava crisscrossing the scorched earth.... which you just can't do with a single straight and a single curve. So, I made a 4x4 "X" intersection, a 3x4 "T" intersection, a 6x6 circular pit, a 4x4 wide lava tile, and a 4x4 wide-to-narrow piece. Thus armed, I made a huge layout, and presented it to him. Then, he told me it needed to be a lava field! ![]() Sooooo.... I made a 7x7, perfectly tileable ground tile. And since I was pressed for time (and thus couldn't base them on foamcore), I set to connecting them with the old standby, masking tape: On either side of the lava field, there were two strips of land (5 of the 7x7 CW ground tiles), and the lava itself was 5 connected sheets of 6 tiles: Here's a shot of everything taped together, before we flipped it over: The lava battlefield (with land) was a total of 35" wide (almost 3') and 56" long (over 4.6')! More pics to come, pending approval from higher ups... some minor sneak preview stuff from Something Below is included! |

Alright! Here's some of the other pics. First, the terrain by itself: (Can you spot the Something Below pieces?) The battle started simply enough, with us vs. the main antagonist. The pieces of paper are bits of equipment that we needed to collect to help us defeat him (and distract us from mounting an immediate and direct assault ![]() Then, he called in Tiamat and two other dragon god avatars to fight for him! (Did I mention this was an obscenely overpowered game, and that we were 50th level?) The AT-AT stood in for one of the Dragon god avatars, and the two at the bottom (on the tins) were the others. We were ultimately victorious in our quest, and our only casualty was a riser that got crunched by an elbow! ![]() |
