If you want to park a big spaceship on a set so that it doesn’t look like it just belly flopped on the landscape, or simply display a vessel you’ve made in “landed” mode, you might want to give it some !
While the retrofit set includes some landing gear, they are intended for the much smaller scout ship in that set, and they look way too small for anything bigger than that.
Below is a description of how to make one big landing gear leg…repeat the process for each leg you want (they could also be used for big walking machines with some creativity and slight modifications).
Here’s how to kitbash big landing gear from the First Light: Retrofit set:
FL: Retrofit set parts list:
platforms.pdf
1 x page 4 (or page 5) [also called ‘platforms con - 01’]
cut out 1 small (single square) platform
exterior-parts.pdf
4 x page 1 (also called ‘turret - big’)
cut out all 4 big turret main body pieces
cut out all 4 small turret rear detail pieces
cut out a total of 4 gun barrel side supports (don’t cut out the holes)
cut out a total of 4 gun barrels
cut out a total of 2 swivel base exterior (textured) pieces
Optional: cut out all gun barrel small end pieces (intended to have a triangular profile) remove all tabs and roll them into tight pipes for detailing
2 x page 2 (also called ‘exterior - 01’)
cut out all 4 wedge-shaped vents
props-misc.pdf
1 x page 2 (also called ‘props 01’ on the page)
cut out the small single square piece on the lower left of the page (with the greenish glowing light in the middle of the circle)
Assemble all the pieces individually as per the instructions for the set with the exception of the gun barrel side supports: don’t cut out the holes for the gun barrels. If you want the pipe details, don’t fold the small gun barrel ends into the triangular shapes, but rather remove all tabs and roll them into small calibre pipes (approx. 5 mm dia.)
Edge all of the pieces carefully before assembly and colour in the white circles of the gun barrel side supports with black marker as well.
Assembly
Step 1 starting with the single square platform as the centre piece and glue it about halfway up its height to the rear of the first big turret main body piece (now a “toe”). The darker coloured band across the bottom of the small platform (with the blue light in the middle) should be just below the upper edge of the rear of the toe. Continue around edge face of the small platform, and attach the remaining three toes in exactly the same fashion. Be sure the toes are level with one another, and sit flatly on the surface. The finished assembly should look like a big “plus sign” with the small platform in the middle, raised up about half of its height from the base level (you can fill this gap in the bottom middle if you like, but I didn’t)
Step 2 Glue the gun barrel side support pieces together on their narrowest surfaces, starting with the white surfaces two by two, then attaching these paired pieces together to make a single symmetrical six sided shallow box with four circles on the upper surface (and four circles on the bottom). This will look a little clunky, as it’s a shallow 6-sided box made up of four smaller boxes, but it will soon be well disguised.
Step 3 Glue each of the four large rolled gun barrels onto one of the darkened circles on the upper surface of the six-sided box (the one you just made in step 2 out of 4 smaller parts) at the red-trimmed ends. Try to keep these four barrels perpendicular and evenly parallel while they dry.
Step 4 Glue one of the rolled-up swivel base cylinders, tab side down, onto the platform at the centre of the main foot assembly. Ensure that it is centred and retains its circular shape before the glue sets.
Step 5 Glue the small detail piece intended to go at the rear of the turret onto midline of the upper surface angle joint of each toe of the main foot assembly, but INVERTED such that the small circles of the texture on the narrow edge face up, and the small squares in the texture of the other narrow surface are facing the swivel cylinder. There should be a small gap at the swivel cylinder (they won’t quite meet it…this is OK), and a small gap at the long upper surface of the toe, since this piece wasn’t meant to fit in this way. Don’t worry, we’ll cover this up shortly. Do this for all four toes.
Step 6 take the 4 wedge-shaped vent pieces and cut out a rectangular-shaped notch (use the white marks in the vent surface texture as the outer boundaries to help you size it). These notches should extend from about halfway up the vent surface to the lower edge, just enough to fit around the narrow detail pieces sitting atop each of the four toes. Once you’ve test fitted, apply glue and slide these vent pieces onto the upper surface of the toe such that it covers the gap of the detail piece at the upper surface, and is flush with the angle at the back of the toe. Repeat for each toe.
Step 7 Glue the other swivel cylinder piece (tabs down) to the textured surface of the remaining small single square shallower platform. Ensure that it is centred, and that it retains its circular shape before the glue sets.
Step 8 You should now have three sub-assemblies: the main foot with toes and lower cylinder, the middle section (shallow platform with cylinder), and the upper six-sided box and its four long barrels. Now you can put them together! Glue the middle section swivel cylinder carefully to the lower surface of the six-sided box first making sure it is centred, square to the flat sides, even and level first. Once the glue is set attach this entire upper assembly to the foot. Glue the upper surface of the bottom (foot) cylinder (you can add tabs to make this hold better if you like) to the lower white surface of the shallow platform single square box. Make sure it is centred, even and square to the rest of the assembly before the glue sets.
Step 9 Optional: Almost finished. If you like, you can add some nice detail by taking the slender pipes you rolled up earlier and adding them to the ‘ankles’. First measure the length you’ll need for a small piece of pipe to fit between the rear angled surface of the toe piece to the bottom (white) surface of the shallow platform in the middle of those cylinder pieces. Once measured, cut eight lengths from those rolled pipes, and start gluing; one on either side of the rear detail piece from the back of the toe to the bottom corners of the mid-cylinder shallow box. Once they’re all glued and in place, you’re ready.
Cut the upper 4 gun barrel cylinders to the correct length, angle and depth for your model, and repeat the process for the other legs. Once the legs are in place on your model, you can add a few more detailing touches using black thread for hoses, cut out some ladders, or even a small elevator platform assembly with railings for getting up and down from the ship. Use your imagination!

The wider bridge and the altered colour exterior hull panels for FL have been submitted to Aleph for the kitbash treatment. Look for them in the fullness of time.
