I kinda promised these instructions back when I posted pics of the finished "Maiden II", things have been really out there for me and still are really, however, my apologies for the delays.
When I built the Maiden II, one of the parts that I continued on as cardstock was the booms (those nice crosspieces on the masts that hold the sails up , also known as the upper and lower yards). I wanted them to be as durable as possible but at the same time I wanted them to be able to hold mini's. Try as hard as I might I could not think of any sane way to do this with Matboard, so I fiddled abit and what follows is what I came up with. These are full instructions with pictures and I hope you all find a use for them (P.S. Don't curse me if you have already built your "Maiden", you can always trim off the old booms and replace them with this new variant).
First you need two booms, don't cut them out yet, but you will need two of them, either two of the large or two of the small.
Step 1: Forget about half of the original cut and score lines, you'll need to make yourself four new tabs and cut off some excess tabs and material. The first new tab you will have to make is marked out in this , I've marked it out on both boom parts to show that it is in the same place on both, repeat on opposite side. (Note: I only used pen to mark out the tab for your convenience, I normally freehand all my tabs).
Step 2: The second tab goes in between the two boom sections you normally fold together. Instead of scoring the center line and folding the boom together as you normally would, score only the center portion which centers the boom, then score along the length of the boom as shown , then cut along the length of the score line along both sides of the boom where it extends out along its length for supporting the sails, there is too much white space in this center tab to use the entire area as a tab, however you can trim the tab near the tip of the end of the boom down to fit as you see fit (too large pushes the shape out of square). You will want this second tab to be on the same side as the first tab you made. Then cut out any excess white area not converted into a tab. Unlike the original boom you will not need the foldover method to line up the boom, trim out the white areas and score as usual otherwise with the exception of step 3 to follow. At this point you should have something that looks like , before you finish trimming out the boom, this image gives a clear view of what the finished new tabs should look like.
Step 3: I slipped up and missed a picture but I should be able to give you an idea using two others I took for this next step. Trim off the squared ends you normally use to box off the center as well as all original tabs (you won't need them). Here in this you can see the boom with the original tabs and the two end caps still attached (the shorter two folds of the boom). , you can see how they have been removed.
Step 4: In one of the two pieces you will need to make tab slots for your sails to slide into so you don't have to kitbash them as well. This is surprisingly easy. I use the larger of the two tabs to make mine. The slot needs to be wide and long eneogh (with a touch of excess room) to allow the sails foldover connection to slide into. Cut along the length of the score line from the outside of one of the rope textures to the other, then cut a similiar line just below it on the boom textures the same length. Insert your blade in either end just eneogh to remove this length of trimmed out part. You should have a slot that looks like this from the (you can see the slot extends along the distance between the two rope textures), and like this from the .
Step 5: Edge now, trust me on this, edge now, this piece is damnably fiddly eneogh as it is, especially the smaller of the two booms. I edged this piece in an odd way as shown in . The black on the ends is a quick simplistic option for those who don't want to cut out or fit a tab or end piece for the masts but don't want a large gaping white hole (I used matboard cut down and glued into the holes), and the large amount of brown on the interior is so that no white shows through the slots where the sails sit, just a personal option (slight reminder, don't forget to edge on the inside of the new sail slots ). Also edge the glue tabs on the exterior of the two parts as shown in this area, the areas you normally glue to the underside of the crowsnests (the white area with the nice little glue bottle picture).
Step 6: Not only did I forget to take a picture of this step, I forgot to do it, and I ended up with one hell of a fiddly glueing at the end. Worse yet this may be a bit tricky to explain but I'll do my best. When I did this one for the instructions I ended up with four lengths of boom which I had to glue together into a tapered square length after I had joined the center, this step would make it so that you only have to glue two lengths of boom together. Apply glue to the new tab you made in the center of the two boom textures (the triangular tab not the rectangular one). In this , it is the bottom tab shown that you apply glue to. Glue to the tab to the underside of the other boom. You should now have a vaguely "L" shaped boom, repeat with the second boom part.
Step 7: Apply glue to the areas I've marked out with blue pen in . Now you take the two boom parts and glue them together, make sure you align them right, you should have something that looks like , here is a more for a better view.
Now fold the two booms into a box and hold until dry, remember to square off the piece before the glue completely dries. You should now have something that looks , well, mostly, in this case only if you missed step 6 . Here is a more of what it should look like now.
Step 8: Now if you missed step 6, apply glue to all four tabs on either end of the boom and glue into place, if you didn't miss step 6 then just glue the two "L" shaped booms together at their two connecting tab points. Be careful of the slots for the sails as you can accidentally glue them closed, it is wise to keep something slim and sturdy (ie: nail file, blade edge, etc...), to slide along the inside length of the slot where the tab connects to the other boom section. Shift the pieces till they are square and evenly glued, allow the piece to dry.
Step 9: Glue into place on the underside of the crowsnest, make sure the slots for the sails are facing out and forward, also make sure that they are along the top part of the boom, if you are looking at the boom from the front of the ship, this shows where the position of the slot should be visually. Your sails should slide in as shown in , when completely in place you should have something that looks like .
As usual I hope that made some sense, and you should now have yourself a square boom that will support mini's, it should look just like . This shows the end I mentioned in step 5 where I edged the piece in black. Normally I wouldn't leave a gaping hole myself but for the average builder it is actually barely noticeable, the picture makes it stand out about two to three times more than normal. You can't tell from any of my pics but in all cases I used a matboard square plug, glued into the hole to fill this in, you can also make a small tab while doing the original cutting out, or any number of other options to fill in this hole if it bothers you.
A side note, even though the instructions sound complicated this is an extremely simple kitbash that anyone can do if they have a little bit of experience and it gives a new dimension of character to the "Maiden" as a whole. I hope somebody finds this idea useful, and who knows, maybe some day someone will make an official kitbash for it , just don't expect one from me for now.
