I'm done with my first kitbash but I want to double check a few things before sending it in. 1) I did mine in GIMP using .xcf format but I needed to export it as a .jpeg to make the submission a single document. When GIMP exports it asks you to select a quality, the default is 85%. Does that lower the resolution and/or size of the picture? 2) I'm unable to make .pdf so as the downloadable kitbash guide suggests I made a word document. When I import the images I formate them to match the GIMP page size, 9.5"x7.5", but Word keeps changing it to 9.51"x7.51". It seems to print to the same size though. But when I print the picture lines are no longer straight. Why? 3) Its not a submission issue really, but that caused the problem. As the guidelines suggest I dowloaded Stuffit to zip the file for transmission. However now every zipped file on my computer uses a new icon, and any time I attempt to open them Stuffit comes up. Making me use it to open the file, it also has an annoying "buy Stuffit Deluxe" window that opens when you leave the program. How do I restore the old settings, and preferably still be able to use stuffit when I xip something? Any help is appreciated. |

I can't help you with all of these items, since you're using tools different from the ones I utilize, but here's a go at 'em. 1) If you must save in .jpg format, crank up the quality to 100%. Reducing image resolution for filesize sake is something that's done at the .PDF stage. Better still, if you have the option in GIMP, is to use the .tif file format. 2) I have no idea why your pages are gaining an extra hundredth of an inch in scale size. Generally, I'd not worry about it, but the line thing has me a bit concerned (and at a loss to explain). You might try resetting GIMP to a 10" x 7.5" page size instead. Word might treat that more kindly (I do all my bashes as 10" tall pages). 3) Stuffit has taken over as your default program when working with .zip files. The only way to get it to quit (in the absence of any other zip file program) will probably be to uninstall it entirely. I'm unfamiliar with the program, but it's a typical behavior. |

Thanks for clearing up that quality issue. I think I'll just let that 100th of an inch go. I'll go back to GIMP and see if I can save as .tif. With luck maybe that will stop that line problem as well. After I submit this, I'll try removing stuffit and see if that resolves the issue. Thanks for your help. |

I've redone the word doc with .tif images. That 9.51"x7.51" issue is still present, but the lines now draw straight. So I going to submit it as is. |

There are a number of free (for personal use) PDF writers out there that will work direct from the GIMP. I just did a test using the CutePDF Writer (creating a .pdf from an image in the GIMP) and it worked just fine. However, even with the resolution set to 300dpi, the .pdf file it created was enormous (6.8MB compared with the 0.3MB .pdf file the image originally came from). The alternative .pdf creator I use also produced an enormous file (3.5MB). Anyone know how to get efficient .pdf sizes when converting from the GIMP? |
