Don't know if anyone's interested or not, but I've recently made a hockey rink (just a flat piece) made for minis and have the ability to switch from no grid to 1" grid to 1.5" as needed. I'm currently working on accessories like the surrounding walls (with goofy ads, plexi-glass, stand-up goals, the penalty box, two player's benches, an overhead scoreboard (which I will probably try to make a scorekeeping device of some sort...probably spinning wheels), and even the zamboni! It prints on 8 pages and ends up being 18"x30". I printed mine on transparency paper for the extra sheen and it looks awesome on white posterboard. Also, I'm planning to make a hockey themed miniatures game with goofy team names and logos. The center circle of the rink will be interchangable to allow it to always display the "home" team you're playing as. (Probably just standees since I haven't gotten good minis out of the modeling stuff I've tried. |

Dude, what do you think your doing?!! World Works is in Canada, if you distract them with hockey we may never hear from them again! (I used to think that the whole Canada + Hockey thing was a myth, then I got trapped with two nice people from Ontario, and a few months later went to a Great Big Sea concert with my girlfriend....  And the Ontarian Incident was in summer!)

I'm still not sure that you all fully grasp how serious I am about this... Here's a good quality sample of what I'm working on. I'm so anal retentive that I work in 300dpi and the file size for the .psd is 1.26gigs! The whole ice part of the rink is as complete as you see here in this sample, and this is just 1/8 of it... Still playing around with contrasts and the opacity of the many many layers. I've never tackled flat ice textures before...it's quite a challenge. |

Love it baby, nice work so far. Take your time, you will learn a lot. Can I have a team in your league??? IMO the red and blue lines need to have slightly wobbly edges. Whitish build-up near the boards and around the net. And a big fat OILERS logo at center ice!! LOL Yes, the files can grow truly huge. If you are working in PS set the scratch disk to a different physical drive than C:\ and you will see a big performance boost. |

O.K. I played hockey and I'll let you know that the paint doesn't bleed on the ice, they are a little bit messed up on the ice. I'll find some pics for ya I got of the ice and rink. Also are all the lines equal to the official measurements of the ice??? They look a little off. Below is the official size. |

I'm thinking about cutting the project down to only half of the rink then just mirroring the same thing for the other side so my computer runs a little smoother. Any objections? |

Much better IMO. I'll try to find some pics of what I mean...but then also think of this as being a "cartoony" version of reality so you are free to exaggerate and embellish at will. |

After many hours of playing with it, as well as looking at various styles... I've decided to go with the NHL layout as it worked out best with the grid. It's very close to being accurate, and very few elements were moved to fit the grid better. Note the face off points have been slightly relocated to line up where two spots oppose each other... Also, I'm only going to work on 1/4 of the rink and it will mirror itself in four ways with the only change made being the referee's crease that only appears on the one side. (Which I may in the end decide to omit all together.) Comments and critique appreciated. |

Remember that before the 90's there was little standardization in the NHL. IIRC, the old Boston Gardens was a weird, small shape that was unlike any of the other rinks. European rinks are also huge. For gaming purposes, fit in in however you need to. |

Made a quick mock-up of the boards. Unfortunately, you can only see the details up close. Yes, It's constructed in 3D. No, it's not glued and yes, my printer ink is running low so it's a bit faint. (Also a preliminary ice concept just put there for show.) I think with something like this, a transparency would be highly recommended. If I put any reflections, I think it'd look weird. Plexi-glass doesn't really make much of a reflection anyways. Maybe when I'm done, I'll at least made it look like you can see the lines of the rink from the outside...from the inside, I have no clue...but some fans would be cool! |

I just realized that when switching my layout grid from 1.5" to 1" two options arise... 1...make the 1" grid have more spaces of movement across the board and have the overall mat be the same size for both layouts. 2...simply shrink the 1.5" grid down to a smaller size so that each square ends up being 1", and everything is truly on a reduced scale. The only issue with the second option is that I would also then have to rescale my boards and accessories so that it fits the reduction in scale. Any input? |

This is all pretty sweet, but I would like to throw in my two cents and point out that Zamboni might be a copywrighted name. May I suggest the Zomboni machine, since all I can think of watching zombies skid around mindlessly on the ice? |
