I couldn't find a simple round top treasure chest in any of the sets I owned (possibly there are some on the Maiden?).

So I kit bashed up the below, textures have been borrowed from CWU, Pubs&Inns and Shellendrak.

The smaller chest is about 3/4 of an inch wide and the bigger one about an inch wide. Doesn't seem like much difference but the bigger one is noticeably larger. Did 3 different banding colours (copper/silver/gold)



I'll try and toss them into Bob sometime this week .

(the edging bleed pretty badly, trying a new type of pen)

Can you make another set that opens?

Hmm, I'll see what I can come up with, but it's gone be tough to make them strong enough ..plus making the lid hold close..got a few ideas to try.

I don't have either of them, but don't seaworks and Mayhem bank havechests with opening lids? Perhaps some one can post an outline of the pieces, not the textures.

Skull Cove has a nice treasure chest (with a more wedge shaped lid) in both opening and closed versions (interior textures are the rim and treasure inserts only):


I'll pick up your version, SirRob, as I think it looks even better and variety makes things look more authentic (the identical, mass-produced look just doesn't cut it for fantasy/historical).

I recently built the Seaworks chest. It's pretty nice but not with a rounded top. The top is shaped like an inverted v. And it comes as an open or closed model.

There are 3 of the chests alomg the wall behind the mini.


I used the paint brush tool to overwrite the texture, leaving just the outline.


I'd be interested in a chest with a round rop kitbash, also.

Looking at the Seaworks chest above it appears to be all one piece.

I can see two ways of assembling it:
Assemble to complete then carefully cut 3 sides and add the internals? leaving the back as the hinge (I’m guessing this is reverse scored before assembly?)

or
Slice it up before Assembly and assemble the lid and base separately then use some small rectangles of paper and glue between lid and base as hinges insert lower and upper pieces?

Any guidance on the above most helpful

Additional Questions :-
Either way does the lid have a flat base or is it lined on the inside to the shape of the lid? (my guess is neither just inked in Black)

How well do the chests close? I cant see any type of locking mechanism do they tend to spring open? or sit part open part closed?

I messed around a little last night, but I need to change the location of a couple of glue tabs and the rounded lid being under "pressure" so to speak means I have to be careful that it doesn’t pull the chest out of shape when I cut the lid away. (I haven’t tried to build bottom and top separately and then hinge them together yet but this maybe the better way to go).

I don't know how well the existing chests close, I assume they stay partly open.

To my mind making the chest 1 piece seems quickest to build. I'd also make the interior lid and bottom as flat pieces. I've tried other full 3D boxes and chests and its very fussy to build. With something this small you'd need to size the interior for the thickness of the card stock.

Heres an pic of how I'd do it:

Challenge: discover a way to fold the paper in such a way that the lid "pops" back in place and "pops" out like some kind of over-center fold.

I haven't got around to lining the lid but here is how it looks so far, the lid holds closed well .



I was going to colour the inside of the lid for the photo but I'm a bit tired .

Hope to have it completed tomorrow night then ill do gold/silver/copper coin inserts and shrink it to fit the smaller chest size . Bit of work left

How long does one take to build?

Hard to say the above is the prototype, which was a fair amount of rebuilding and test fitting.

The fiddliest bit is the lid of the chest the insert is fairly easy and just drops in, maybe add a few minutes for doing the insert. I'll try and time the next one

I'm not sure whether to do a lid liner or just blacken it...happy to take thoughts on this?

If you duplicate (copy-paste and rotate by 180°) the lid top piece and attach it to what will be the front/lock edge of the lid, but make it a tiny bit narrower, you can basically "sandwich" it inside after glueing the lid sides on, so it will both obscure the sides' tabs, add texture to the inside lid and make the whole lid a bit sturdier. Simple addition, great effect.

I second (or fourth or fifth, or whatever count it is ) the opinion that this little kitbash is absolutely great! I think everybody out there, both fantasy and pirate model builders, will be really happy about your archetypical treasure chest. Great job!

Just another quick update :



Not that you can see it in the picys but the chests are lined both lid and lower section.

I need to rework the copper coins and try and workout someway of making the chests stay closed when empty with coins no worries but when empty no friction...ideas welcome (tried a few variations on a card lip but afer 2-3 opens it fails.)

Not sure if the small chest will be possible to build openable its a very small and fiddly...

The front surface of the chest could have a small slot exactly at the middle top point along the scoring, with the front not being entirely sandwich-glued directly below it (maybe a slider template needs to be glued in between where the space directly below the slot is cut away). That way, you could add a small strip (like an iron lockpin) to the front of the lid that can be inserted into the chest's front.

Gets a bit fiddly, though.

That was my first thought too. But if the interior lid is attached to the exterior lid when printed, that locking tab would need to be a separate piece added later.

Good point.
Which would make it an optional piece. An optional lock, either with the outside or inside visible, with an integrated pin, which would be glued on when using the slot. Those who don't like fiddly stuff can always build their chest without the lockpin and slot.

Matt Lyon did a nice crate in Urban Mayhem Industrial that can be opened or closed. He did a tab on the lid that slides into a slot on the body of the chest.



Maybe something like that would work, and it's not too fiddly.

The tab above wont work very well as my walls are only double card thick, I'd need to go triple to be able to insert a tab into the wall of the chest. or try and carve out some sort of slot between the two layers

Oddly enough I came up with a solution while sleeping, basically a thin strip card down each side on the inside that overlaps the base and the lid (similar to old style cigar boxs). Seems to work okay and doesn't detract from the look and feel of the chest when its open and holds the lid down whether full or empty.

I'll try and run off some more test builds today

Longtime no post for me, I'll be finishing this of over the next couple of weeks, basically I went on holiday and came back sick and proceeded to be sick for about the next 4 months turned out I had gallstones anyways had the gallbladder taken out last week and I'm feeling a heap better so back into the paper terrain building etc.

I'd solved most of the technical problems I just need to lay out the chest and submit
