This afternoon I worked on decks, bows and sterns for a 3" wide modifiable Maiden. I have decided to buy photoshop and do this professionally, I can already see the potential for a huge variety of size options, including width, length, and depth. I have started with the 3" so I can get some practice in using TLX as this is my first experience with it. I will have more pics up tomorrow including hopefully, posts, rails, walls, bow and stern walls. I already like what I'm seeing and hope to offer this to Denny if I do a decent job.







Btw the only reason these aren't edged is because I'm not sure where I need to yet, also I discovered I need 1/4 inch foamcore, I have 3/16th. I have had to make alerations to suit but the tiles are very similiar to the 1/4 inch design (though I think thicker would be better in this case). This is just prototype, something I can screw up testing various workable options using the TLX design.

I already plan on altering the other two 3 x 3 inch bow and stern decking to have quarter linx used as part of the rail and bow system, as well as the wall system.

Its so utterly bizarre that you're doing this. Scott and I have had long talks about the merits of a fully TLX'd ship design. I think its an instant winner.

I've been wanting to do a modular Maiden forever. The Maiden 2 in it's own way was, it had options for different decks but that was about it. For some reason while I was watching the vid for putting together Streets of Himmelviel the idea of TLX'ing the Maiden just popped into my head and won't leave, I already have idea's for how to do the bow and stern parts. in various sizes, posts and walls will be the most fun obviously, but I have an idea that will keep the Maidens bow the way it's supposed to be by original design. I have alot of ideas for this, and I'm confident most of them will pan out.

The Maiden remains one of my favorite sets (lol, this from a castle lover), shhhh, don't tell CWU >.>

Er... the "Maiden 2"? Could you elaborate on that?

Lol, sure, though it's not what yout hink xyzchyx. Surprisingly I have never built the Maiden herself (though I am for comparison with the TLX version soon). I began kitbashing her from the start and made a longboat variation as my first test. The Maiden 2 is what I labled my second Maiden Kitbash as. Sadly unlike this TLX version I never did instructions and it was a fully hand altered build (no photoshop). You can see pics of both finished versions of my Maidens here,

There is also an album for the Maiden longboat in progress but it's sparse and not as impressive. I didn't fully document either build, but took shots here and there, sadly this means there was no pics of the rear castle being built.

Sadly the Maiden 2 is not an official WorldWorks design, and I didn't have photoshop then so I did what I could being creative with what I had available. Sorry to get your hopes up if you thought it was another set lol. I should rename that ship, probably confused alot more than just you.

Hmm... Denny, I didn't think I'd need anything, but if you have blank templates for cornerposts, anchors, and various floors & walls it would be helpful.

I spent most of my building time today building some of the other deck tiles so I'd have parts to play around with. What little I got done on posts and walls (not much sadly) are visible in the pics below.

Working on the bow piece I came up with my first trial and error (this was over the last hour) with some modifications I can make this work. I am trying to design a removable front support post, I have ideas to make it more sturdy and still removable, I'll be doing those tomorrow if I have time before game.



The front piece you see in these pics is purely a trial piece for doing pretty much anything to, I prefer to test before permanently basing something on finished texture if I can. Below you can also see one of the more obvious and expected problems I knew I would encounter.

I have resized the pictures in the original post so this is a little more load friendly (later I will remove old ones and replace them with links), as well sorry for the drop in quality, the battery died on the cam right when I tried to take the first pic so I used my webcam which doesn't like the average light in my room.

I see you're running into the same thing I ran into with my Hinterlands build... Getting the curves just right does take a good bit of fiddling to get right. It looks like you have a good start on it though - hopefully you don't need to many more tries to get it right.

Thanx Magius, curved walls havn't presented issues for me yet, curved bent walls on the other hand. It's ok though, I found a way around it.

So far my deck layout of tile parts gives me variations on four different widths of ship, 3, 6, 12, and 18 inch wide versions. I have done various layouts as well as the various bow, center deck and stern tiles. Below are pics of the different designs laid out on graph paper.

This first one is the tiles and the 18 inch wide behemoth test layout off to one side (you can see some of the tiles in use). Also there will be two versions of the 6x3 inch tile, one with decking running lengthwise, the other with decking running widthwise.


This second image shows several different ship variations that should be possible.


I'm open to suggestions and ideas. It should be noted that three different sizes of mast width will be available, Also by keeping to the 3/6 inch grid I can still make this set into 1.5 inch grid without additional issues (a later expansion may allow for more even number designed ships, I started to get way too many tiles).

I took some time off of this project to learn Gimp2 and to build Dwarven TLX for my gamers. It is still progressing, I just don't have anything printable yet, everything current is prototype mostly made by hand.

Is anyone else having issues with 6x6 TLX tiles printing true 6x6. I am having issues with this no matter what settings I use on my printers.

Is it an HP printer? They're notorious for being inaccurate.

I don't have any trouble with that with my Epson - it may be your printer. Like sunraven said, HP printers are notorious for that. Otherwise, just make sure page scaling is turned off - but I don't think that's your problem. You could measure how much your printer is changing the size by, then scale the tile in the GIMP or Photoshop to adjust, but considering the cost of printers, that may be an unnecessary amount of work.
Come to think of it, I did print a few pieces on my older HP printer, and didn't have a problem, however I don't think they were groundtiles - just a few walls and props and posts.

I have always had issues printing square (mine prints about 1/32" too long the 11" direction of the paper and prints correct the other direction). You can try to rescale each page to counter the stretch/shrink using GIMP or similar.

I'm new and I'm currently building the maiden.

I'm hoping to see a kit bash (and then build) a 10man sail boat for my AD&D campaign. So, if you're building something that sounds similar to that, let me know, I'd love to build one too!

P.S. Note to the designers; the front hull of the maiden is missing a black line on the back of the glue tab in step 1 (the very first piece you print when building the hull). I sheared off the tab before I realized the other side had it.

Also, I can not fathom a 20-30min build time for the first few steps, but I am just a beginner.

You may want to take a look at Skull Cove - there is a sailboat in there, along with a whole lot of good stuff. (For some reason the derrick keeps being played with.... )

Seconding the Skull Cove recommendation. The boats are open jolly/long boats; simple but very effective. IIRC, the standard hull take 8 figures on 1" bases comfortably, but not 10. There is a 'very long boat' (which I've not built yet) but looks like it would be ample for 10 figures. Hulls and sails (3 choices) are separate so you have a choice of rigging (including a dual mast rig on the very long boat if required).

Ok, I'll check out skull cove set, anyone build these boats and post pics yet?

Meh, I've checked out the skull cove set, I don't really like it. And if I'm going to have to kitbash something I think I'd rather work off of the maiden.

There are some around. If I remember later (when I have time) I will dig around for some.

That is too bad. I, on the other hand, enjoy Skull Cove. What is it that turns you off, if you don't mind me asking?

Alot of the blocky lego style and design, to me the maiden looks genuine.

Sorry, if that came off rather harsh, I know people work very hard on these models and I fully respect them and their work, but sometimes it can be hit/miss with anyone - so, it was just imho.

No problem. You were asked your opinion; you gave it, clearly and concisely - nothing wrong with that.

Given that most of WWG's sets are designed for gaming rather than as display pieces, Denny and the rest of the WWG crew have a constant challenge to make things look good and easy to build. A huge part of WWG's success is that they do a such of great job simultaneously achieving these two seemingly conflicting goals - WWG's sets look superb for teh build effort required. Of course, this does mean is that some of the quicker to build sets may not look as outstanding as others.

Also, it helps when people say what they do or don't like about the sets, as it gives Denny and the crew a lead on how they're going and what people really want.

Well, my first 3 purchases were; the Maiden, Thoumonts and Castleworks - which were "must haves".

I'm also eyeing; Lost Halls of the Dwarven Kings, Cathedrae Noctis & Harbormaster if that helps them out.

I like parts of interior castle, interior pubs, swampwoods village and watchtower too.

The Maiden is a spectacular piece in comparison to almost any "gaming" models I've seen produced. It is one of Denny's best in my opinion and after having worked at kitbashing it several times now (going on three boats done) and still having not built the original I have to say it is one of the more complex pieces too.

I have little to mention in progress here, most of the actual physical designs are working very well, my progress with Gimp... not so much

Currently not too much to add to pics here as most of the "new" parts are blank white templates or parts from other TLX sets that I had extra of.

As to the crappy size printing, sadly this is due to my printer, and funds are very tight. I've been off work since June last year (the 16th was when I cut myself) and I am short about $800 a month and surviving off of Workers Compensation, one more surgery to go in May and several more months of physio and I'll be able to go back to work. Insane how much time one has to do random building (lots of backprinted stuff) when there is nothing else to do most of the time. Atm doing some WW's paper model additions to a dungeon crawl board game and a WWII tabletop battle game, both with lots of miniatures and parts, making them 3D is pretty interesting. WW's compliments them very well. I'd mention the names, but it's from a company that could be considered a competitor even though they are a board game producer.

I will see about adding some pics soon, no promises as usual, I'll have to get hold of a camera again.

Also I'd totally understand at this point if an "official" version of this went live due to how long this has taken me. Especially since it was something Denny and Scott have already had this on their minds, I'm sure I'm not the only one playing with the idea.

Having finally finished my Maiden build, I've taken some time to relook at old posts...
How has your modular TLX Maiden project come along? It intrigued me at the time - which happened to be when I first came aboard WWG & the Forums - but then my build was but a glimmer in my mind's eye...

I put alot of my paper model stuff into mothballs, you'd think with a year and a half off of work I'd have found the time to do more with this. Unfortunately I don't have the work space I once did right now, my printer crapped out on me and I havn't gotten around to getting a new one. Though I'm working on changing that. I am back to work as of this year and off of Workers Compensation.

There was more progress than the above pictures show, I will look into adding some additional pics if I can find the container it's stored in. I upgraded to an Iphone 4 (it was free though now I'm sucked into a long term contract >.<) So I have a pretty decent camera available at all times. I miss this hobby alot and now that my left thumb is functioning at about 80% I am looking at getting back into it again.

Apologies for any that hoped this would be anything short and in the near future. I'm climbing out of a pretty deep hole and getting myself going again. It is amazing what alot of time on your hands and no money can do to ones psyche. I have popped in from time to time and enjoyed alot of the new builders and their pics. This hobby just keeps getting better and better.

P.S. Denny & Co, loving the new stuff that's coming out, you guys always did brilliant work, but now your building on that perfection rather than sliding. I always knew this company would go places

Been there done that (job sit-wise) so I understand. Best wishes that you're getting back in the running. Just finished my Maiden build - imperfections, but it was my first big solid build = learning curve.

Starting a couple concept TLX-friendly Deadfall-theme riverboat builds: "Deadfall Jack" - a tramp sidewheeler (nothing more than a floating barn/warehouse with a few passenger compartments) using a lot of Thoumonts-TLX; "Deadfall Queen" - somewhat larger casino passenger riverboat that has seen better days actually kitbashing other WWG textures (while expanding my GIMP working knowledge).
