Welcome to the forums. As a fellow fan of XCom, I've wanted to do something similar for a long time but haven't yet got around to it. There is no perfect set on it's own, so you will probably need to do a bit of kitbashing to get it to look just right. First Light would work well for the base, as would Mars Station, but don't overlook Platform Command and PC: Red Sector. For props, you really need to look through all the modern sets as they all have bits that could work well. Lastly, Worldworks is good friends with and linking to them is permitted... which is handy, because Ebbles has some really nice props (ambient elements) in the classic Derelict II set. The Ebbles stuff does look like it would give a nice set of props for use. As for kitbashing, I wouldnt even know where to begin to start on that. No actual minis decided as of yes. I'm hoping to get some background scenery together to actually drum up interest in gaming in this fashion. Most of the people in my area play 40K and I'm trying to weed them down into something a bit more into the small scale aspects of things. |

Well to begin with, I'd recommend just picking up one set and seeing how you enjoy building cardstock models. It's not for everyone, but if you enjoy it, you will find yourself experimenting, cutting models and glueing them in new ways... every editing the images if you have the graphics software. It becomes a bit addictive... but it's a healthy addiction... if you ignore the paper cuts and occassional knife slippages. For the base, I'd suggest picking up First Light and playing with it... seeing what you can come up with... and when you are ready for an outdoor scenario, start with Streets of Mayhem for the roads and Bits of Mayhem for some building shells (no interiors).
