That's exaclty what I'm thinking, find a happy medium. I just wonder if anyone out there cracks down on the space limits, and how it affects their game. |

IMO 20'x20' is the smallest usable (i.e. not just a visual prop) space on a 1" grid. |

4"x4" is hardly enough room for a fight with any movement at all. I mean with props in the room taking up even four squares, then that only leaves 12 squares for something to be standing in (PC or baddie). Even a group equal in size to the party becomes troublesome, let alone larger. In 4e the average party is apparently 5 PCs. Pit this group against 5 NPCs and you have 10 miniatures on the table. I prefer my combats to have at least a little movement, so for a fight of this caliber I would typically utilize a space in a dungeon of roughly 6"x6" as a minimum. As for artificially enlarging rooms due to the cardstock products, I haven't done this...at least to my knowledge. If I have, it wasn't intentional. |

Realism in tight quarters is one thing. It is another to have serious issues moving miniatures due to crampage of walls and things like that. It ends up causing players to limit their actions and therefore stand in one place the whole time. That gets boring. |

By "usable" at 20'x20', I mean in the context of a larger fight. I don't expect the whole party to be in there swinging at once -- but *someone* will have to go take out the sniper within, and that's enough space for a good close mano y mano throwdown... Even if 10'x10' is more realistic, it's just a joke for combat. I always start a new campaign with the line "You open the door. It's a 10 by 10 room with an orc sitting on a treasure chest. Roll for initiative!"
