So, my little girl (who is in Kindergarten) came home a few weeks ago with a project to do: they were going to have a Transportation Parade, and everyone needed their mode of transpo. The instructions were to create something out of a box that the kids could wear for a little parade at school. My little one decided she wanted a space ship, shuttle style, with wings and "rocket boobsters" (her cute but short lived way of saying boosters) and the whole nine yards. Oh - and pink, of course.

So, a quick trip to the Container Store to get the proper box and tube materials (including a cool pastry box for the nose cone), a quick trip to the Michaels for pink spray paint and flame colored tissue paper, and we were ready to go.

Because of my (rather new-found) cardstock hobby, I already had a lot of the other materials - cutting board and cutters, spray adhesive, etc - and I also had the skill to put it all together. Designing and assembling the shuttle was quite easy. The pasty box became the nose cone. I cut up a long tube to be the rocket boosters. I cut 4 wings from another box, each with an attached panel, and attached 2 wings to each other, with the panels folding opposite sides, and then attached the wing panels to the box, which completely stabilized the wings (think CaveWorks floating walls, kind of). Foamcore was used to make a nice pair of handles for the inside to help her stabilize it and direct the ship while walking. Pink spray paint to get the thing pink (turns out there were a variety of pink vehicles at the parade). Velcro and ribbon (pink, of course) was used to create removable straps, so that she can play with it once the parade is over.


She loves it. Should have seen her face this morning as I rolled out the final product - or her face as she was marching in the parade with her classmates. Is there anything better than a happy child?


I post this here because, well, before discovering WWG eight months ago or so, I would have had NO idea how to even start this project, nor the materials, nor the confidence. But instead, because of my new hobby, this was a breeze, and my little one has a new toy that she loves that I made for her. (And it _was_ one of the more sophisticated and better looking vehicles at that parade.)

Cool , I myself have found several of the techniques I learned from WW's usable in many other situations. Glad to hear I'm not the only one.

So where are the pictures of the kid with the rocket, hmm??
