I let them talk me into running a two session SW game based on the web comic . I have no idea why I want to run a game in that setting so badly, but there it is... (It really is not my typical fare at all, I tend toward the grim and cynical...) And it gives me a chance to try out the system in play.

Not just for those who already play SW, but for those (like me) who have a waffling interest in the system.

Ok, Sunday I played my first rpg action in 20 years or so. I'm DMing the Age of Worms Campaign for the girlfriend and kids (12 year old boy, 12 year old girl). None of them had ever played any RPG before. I had planned to get more prep and build some models, but didn't get a chance. The Age of Worms Campaign is a series of adventures appearing in Dungeon magazine. There are 12 adventures, 1 a month, taking characters on an 'Adventure Path' from 1st to 20th level. The first adventure, The Whispering Cairn, came out in the latest issue. The subscriber ship date for the issue was may 17th, so I figured I'd have plenty of time to prepare and build models before we'd start the campaign. I failed, however, to take into account the innordinately long shipping time. I didn't receive my copy until june 6th There was no time to model the dungeon, so I spent my time reading & rereading the module and rulebooks to prepare for the adventure.

Anyway, the adventure itself is great for a first level adventure, and has a lot of character to it. The main backdrop of the campaign, a city named Diamond Lake, is described in detail. It's a dark, seedy mining town with well fleshed out NPCs and a lot of color to it. I started off the campaign by writing up character backgrounds for the 4 player characters. I stuck with the archetypical party. fighter, rogue, cleric, wizard, and I added an npc ranger for help. I wrote detailed histories that tied them into the backdrop and tied them to NPCs that will figure prominently in the campaign. I wrote the characters up myself, so they didn't have to spend a lot of pre-game time dealing with numbers and skills that they didn't understand. They read their character backgrounds, and I had them start off at the entrance of 'the whispering cairn'.

We played a good 8 hours. They had plenty of opportunities to be involved in combat, exploration, puzzle solving, and trap evasion. By the end of the evening we hit a good natural stopping point. I calculated experience, and they have already made it to 2nd level. I'm going to start the second session off in town with a little role playing to sell some goods, purchase some goods, and chat with the NPC that our wizard is apprenticed to, fleshing out the background of the dungeon they are currently exploring.

Everything went really well, and I think the kids really enjoyed playing. I'm going to slowly crank up the difficulty of the monsters, making sure they use their skills/feats to the best of their ability. In the beginning I just wanted the kids to understand the mechanics, but I don't want it to be a cakewalk all the way through. The party needs to get into some scrapes where they barely make it out. If you fear for your characters a little, it makes the game that much more fun.

Anyway, it's great to be playing RPGs after so long! I'll try to get some WWG scenery/props into the next adventure, really! If anyone is interested in reading the character writeups I can post them in the RPG section.

Didnt get any RPGs in again this month (one friend is trying to get me to play Paranoia), I ran a couple of games at a local convention in Cincinnati last Saturday - started with Fire As She Bears age of sail game with a French admiral that lost control of the French force fairly early on, but after 6 hours, the game ended in a draw. Think both sides failed to concentrate fire on individual targets so only 2 ships struck their colors while several had lots of damage but continued to fight. One Brit 74-gunner was dismasted but continued to dish out major damage as the French seemed to forget it was there and sail past at close range. Second game was Heroscape, and 3 of us had a great time playing that. I was the first to lose, while the new player ended up the winner. Now if only I could figure out a way of using a WWG product with my 1/2000 scale ships.....

2nd consecutive (weekend) play session of Shadows over Camelot. Great fun. I heartily recommend this game to everyone! It's an exceptionally well done game. And is alot different than just about everything out there. Cooperation and Knightly valor are the sprit of this excellent game. Just watch out because their may be a traitor in your midst. (Cool miniatures and excellent artwork will really get you into the medieval quest to save Camelot)

I've actually made a Round Table paper model and used some of WWG's stuff for other areas too. We (our game group) are going to build a 3d terrain set for this game to help further immerse us into the Arthurian legends.

Well, this really should be in a July 2005 confess your habits thread, but I'll post here anyway...

We were playing every Saturday night for quite a few years, but over the course of the last year, we had dropped down to only every other Saturday, with usually about 75% of the group showing up.

Well, just last month, June 2005 in case anyone is wondering, all but 1 player showed up to the last 2 games, and it appears that in July, the majority of the group members will be gaming every Saturday with all of the members here for 2 of the games.

Here's hoping anyway. I also fill my time with cardstock modeling, got lots of dungeon to work on as well as some VillageWorks, SiegeWorks and CaveWorks.

When I'm not doing either of those, I'm either playing City of Heroes or GuildWars.

Just call me an internet game playing junkie!

Oh and I have some figures to paint to, but I do what I can with the time I have!

I know somebody who has run it a few times and very much likes it. Feeling that they did a good job of tailoring the Spycraft/D20 system to the setting, not the setting to the system. I forget which, if any, supplements he has. It is self contained, the PHB is not required, nor does it use the D20 Modern rules.

However when MGM and Sony Studios decided to increase the cost of the license AEG decided that it was too expensive and dropped the line, so if you are thinking about getting it then do so soon, it will not be reprinted.

I have used Spycraft, the system that SG1 is 'powered by', and like it. In many ways I find the system superior to the D20 Modern rules (Spycraft predates D20 Modern). Spycraft 2.0 is coming out soon, and I intend to get it. I was never a big enough Stargate fan to be all that interested in the RPG, but the premise seems a good one for a game, it even has a 'party' (SG team) concept built in, and as I said the base system is good.
