I think it would be ideal if the mat were tileable. Then you would have the option of combining two 3x4 mats to make a 4x6.

I also think something like a planet shouldn't be part of the mat (unless every Wormhole scenario involves a planet).

Grid Size? That depends upon what type of game I'm playing. For space fleet games I use No Grid. For ground-based games I use a 1" Grid. Eventually, these are the two types I would buy. Since the mat size is 3x4feet, I would buy two of No Grid and two of 1" Grid, since I have a 4x6 table. And we use all that gaming space with our games.

Like was mentioned previously, I would seek some opinion from http://www.star-ranger.com/. That is the most-read web site for space games and it attracts gamers from many differing rulesets.

I hope this project is completed. You can put me down for 4 mats.

For spacegames i would use Hex grid, maybe larger then 1-inch hexes because many models are larger.

For most others I use 1-inch grid, and i voted 1-inch grid before I realize that the question aimed mostly for space games.

Been off for a few days and missed this thread. I'll have one. I like the idea of not having to cart about foamcore tiles., but I do have a question.

How will mayhem stuff sit on a mat though? There'll be a 5mm or so lip around all of the buildings as they'll sit on the foamcore base.

Vinyl mats normally run between $20 - $40 depending on size. I'd imagine the Wormhole mat will be $25 or so. It'll have to be pretty special, though, since you can get a 6' x 4' star mat for $40.

First day back on the net after an extremely troublesome housemove that is still not complete (I am currently renting) and using an extremely slow and flaky net connection. Still it's better than nothing.

I voted for the 1" grid, primarily because all of my gaming is D20 fantasy. I really am keen on Wormhole though and I am sure that will be better off gridless.

As far as interest in a mat purchase goes, I am very interested. Acceptable pricepoint would be $20-30, but I would worry about how useable it would be with other space games (my kids and I played battlefleet gothic at Salute and they were hooked). Also, the design featured might lead to some very same-y games. Wouldn't it be better to have a plain starfield and allow the placement of planets, asteroids etc, etc to be different between games ? Although I like the mat, for the price mentioned I would expect to get more than a few games out of it.

Obne final worry is postage price to the UK. On products like Dwarven Forge, this is ruinously expensive, effectively doubling the price of the product. Something to watch out for if all of the overseas population who intially expressed interest find themselves priced out through no fault of your own.

A clear grid layer has been mentioned, but I don't think it's been taken on board (I could be wrong). I tend to agree with Frank that the planet really does limit the uses of this matt, even though it looks amazing.

I was trying to think in terms of games I play, if the matt was streets of mayhem for example, how would I use it? I would probably get very tired of the same set up, but would expect it to basically be a matboard of streets with blank spaces left for me to add buildings.

I hope this matt does sell very well, and that we see other maps in the future... I just can't imagine what it would need to be for me to actually buy one.
