Nice texturing again.
As I said before, I use sketchup but had not gone as far as importing textures. I typically just use it to mass out layouts or rarely prototype a building.

I would really dig some premade pieces parts with textures to layout, however buildings seem to rarely be stock.

I also echo the concern of ripping textures off sketchup to print. Even at low texture it would be better than nothing.

As well as anyone that may want to run 15mm or less games could really use a very pixilated image and still build relatively nice models.

In an effort to protect WWG property, I would think sans textures would be best. Possibly provide sketchup untextured, but similiarly colored models for use as a layout tool and in this case, it might be better as a community effort instead of an official WWG (take time off of the WIP meter) type endevour.

Secondly, the models can be loaded to sketchups own online library, but I wonder if there could be a 'private' WWG repository of WWG based sketchup models. And a 'how to' for the texturing if someone so chooses. (with Gimp being free, everyone has the tools)

This sounds a bit obvious, but has anyone bothered to ask the guys who built the sketchup program what texture "protection" features it has, or might be built into it?

Just a thought. But it seems something that might be in the professional version vice the free version we are all using.

That is a good point, Zip, and an essential inquiry for anyone owning products being displayed with SketchUp. As a business I would want to keep a tight control over my properties. Otherwise with paper models, to quote someone, 'That great sucking sound you'll hear ...' will be your hard work slipping into a patch of cyber quicksand.

Not to be totally cynical ... well, I guess I am on that point, however, WWG could enable the control it needs by keeping all SketchUp rendering of its products within the confines of its own site, with the appropriate safeguards and rules in place. It (SketchUP) is neat beyond words for personal planning use. As a service to its customers we'd all love that. Now how the heck do you really protect it????? A protected customer service area along the lines of purchasing a model set?

Example, you buy a model set which also allows you to download a SketchUp render of that set if it is available ... with or without the texturing, or whatever would be acceptable to WWG in that case. In contrast if you have an area on the site where the purchase of said model set is not neccesary, the SketchUp render would have no texturing or 'SAMPLE' pasted over it ... whatever.

We can't guard enough against 'Walmart Fallout', where a good idea can contribute incidentally by its success to the failure of smaller businesses.
Enough, there it is ... another humble opinion. Two thumbs up for the SketchUp sets being made ... two thumbs down for any texturing.

What if you threw a heavy photoshop filter on the textures? Something that makes them still recognizable but much crappier looking. There's gotta be something that'd work...

I agree that the sets would attract artist and more gamers. I was very taken by the art work of the model sets and then attracted to gaming itself. The popularity of a SketchUp render certainly isn't questioned. It would be a super plus. [/quote]

Heh, I've been using Sketchup to construct builds for that other product previously mentioned, and never considered using it for WWG builds!

Guess it's one of those things that when you see someone else suggest it you go, gee, I should have thought of that! It does work well though to help you figure out how many pieces you need to do a particular build!

Also let's you get an idea of how something is going to look before you start molding, err I mean printing!

Dropping the DPI and adding a watermark doesn't seem to detract to much.



50 DPI with a watermark on the large surface's, pretty sure it's of low enough quality to become uglyfied..possibly the watermark should be more noticeable with the url? may still need to go B/W....

Any tips on lining up multiple pieces inside the software, I always seem to struggle...

I know I'd buy sets of just the textures to use in Sketchup. That'd be awesome.

Also, if you want to see some other really cool gaming Sketchup Work, go to the Goodman Games board, and check the Art & Artists forum for None the Wiser's various posts. He's done some really cool stuff (and I shudder to think - in a good way - what he'd be able to do with WWG textures).

Impressive, most impressive, how long did it take to do? I take it that you used the textures at 100%.

The more I think about it the more I believe that having these sets for sale is the right way to go. They are so much more than a planning tool.

Model the set in sketchup and texture it was the work of the past 5 days of free time clicking few hrs a day I guess at most, not exactly loaded with free time .

building the test dungeon took me about an hour, lots of mistakes, plus as you build you relies certain bits work well to have pre made like singlewall,doorway,singlewall or singlewall, T junction, Singlewall etc etc

Now I have the basic geometry and the textures that fit, Just need to cut them down to a none usable form while leaving them pretty enough for building from in sketchup.

Did you guys buy this or did I download the wrong version. According to the site it's only good for 8 hours.

*edit* - ahh I downloaded the PRO6 version which is limited. The regular version6 is free. Sorry guys.

Played around with a texture free version and colour coded the pieces so they were easily recognizable. :

Does make seeing what bits you need to make much easier, no pretty factor, total file size 2mb.

I know I would be. I really could have used something like this in the past. Wouldn't this also reduce the intellectual property issues of including the textures?

I'd prefer the texture-free version, actually. I'd just need it for planning and I don't need the eye candy to eat processor cycles and HD space.

Yeah, I'd prefer the texture free version too, would be safer for Denny and the boys in the long run.
