Long story short, there's a good reason for it, BUT we are planning to add the ability for users to save a shopping cart for a later purchase.
It was one of those gravy features that was deferred in order to meet the launch deadline. Basically, there are several ways of going about it, but I didn't have the time to do a lot of experimentation before the deadline, so I filed it on my upgrade list. I've been crossing items off that list as opportunity permits.
It's probably not what you wanted to hear, but it boils down to the fact that the key thing for us is we don't want this to just be another lame e-store, we want it to be something better and more useful, so the store is going to be a work in progress for a bit longer.
