Well, as much as we appreciate the sentiment, we really don't want "bash the competition" threads on the forum, because it makes us look bad. It's also not really fair to tar all of the competition with such a broad brush.

None of you are right. Since this is apparently a typical internet forum. 1. I am new to this hobby. 2. The only models I have are worldworks sets. 3. As much as I like and enjoy WW, I do not want to limit my options to just the 20-30 sets offered by WWG. 4. I am asking for 1. The name of a reputable company that offers a similiar product at a similiar price, Or in defferance to that, Maybe a forum,I have joined PaperModelers. 5.I do not need a review or a link just a name or some ideas or advice from others longer in this game. I have a basement full of gaming tables and terrain, I have always dismissed paper because of quality. However the WWG sets are as good as anything I have seen before. If you are still reeading this , How would one submit a kit or model of ones own design. Thank you for your patience and obvious interst in my conundrum. And as for promoting other companies, I am a tattoo artist, Yet I have the 85 samples of other peoples work, I am glad to say who did what, Because I am confident in my own abilities. Only a coward hides from an opponent. And only a poor business fears competition. Yet I understand that you do not want people on here going "Yeah WWG set &^% is godd but so is http://www.craptastic.me. That would be stupid to pay for others advertisement. I have all the sets I have bought, and I plan to buy 2-3 a week until I have them all. So I will be done in a month. I work for myself so I do the models everyday. I already have 4 tables worth of terrain. So again other than RPG fishing implement, And the place that sells WWG I do not want that to be it. I am a rabid consumer, I like WH40K 6 months later I have 6000 pts of EVERY army. I am trying to nerdify my son so any help is appreciated. Is that any clearer, I do not need reviews, pics , links just a few names. It would be nice if the people from World works could mention any that they like or are impressed with, Heck IM it to me I do not care. I guess what I am trying to say is don't turn my first post into some 'Oh God you violated term 342.123D-6s of the FAQ. Either answer me or ignore me, please. If you are still reading this, I actually discovered Ebbles first but the day I logged onto his site it was closed, I had missed it barely. And he sent me here. Back in November or October. |

My $0.02 worth: IMHO, Denny and the rest of the WWG crew lead the field in terms of textures for cardstock terrain. While there are others that may do more sophisticated geometry, it's the textures that make all the difference in how the models look in the flesh (This may explain why people haven't been able to suggest other suppliers that look as good, that and the fact that the people who hang out here are more likely to be the ones who especially like the WWG models). There are a range of other people and companies doing cardstock models (for fantasy, Dave Graffam and Fat Dragon Games spring to mind) but I find the WWG sets look better (to my eyes anyway) on the table, due in very large part to the quality of the WWG textures. (IIRC someone posted a few in-game pictures here that included both WWG and Dave Graffam models a while ago, just don't recall where - a bit of search-fu may turn them up). As for non-fantasy, you'll need to ask others about those. (And just a friendly reminder that due to WWG forum rules it's ok to talk about other providers here, just not link to them or actively promote them - WWG is paying the bills for this forum after all.) |

For dressing up a modern city, I have used a variety of buildings, including but not limited to: Most of the older WWG products some of the Ebbles Miniatures models some of TVAG's 'Mean Streets' blocks a number of free models by Tommygunner some free stuff from TopoSolitario some of the Microtactix 'Twilight Street' models (and a few of the older untextured models too - though I ought to make textured versions with Model Builder) some of Germy's buildings a few old Momir Farooq models cars from Streetpaper.de some things from the Canon papermodels site some things from various free cardmodel sites Some things I made myself with Evan Designs 'Model Builder' software Some things I made myself with Photoshop. Much of the completed buildings were left behind in a move from Texas to Hawaii (shipping paper models? Seriously? It would have been like MANY shipping crates full of empty boxes, totally not worth the expense) I am gradually rebuilding when the mood strikes me. I really like WWG's products, particularly their Modern (as opposed to Fantasy) buildings, but I want to see the same variety on the table that I see in real life. In a 2 block radius from my house I can find: a freeway, multi-lane streets, one-ways streets, and alleys, 1920s bungalows, wooden 1940s 2-story apartments (as seen in Big Jim McQuade), 1970s concrete block multi-story blocks and modern houses, 1980s McMansions, modern highrises, a gigantic New England style church (it would be called a cathedral if it were that kind of denomination), a Buddhist temple, a good-sized Baptist Church, a Mormon temple, old folks home(s), medical support places, and 2 hospitals, fast food, casual dining, Serious Dining, a number of clubs, assorted retail, gas stations, Radio Shack, a gym, an art supply house, and more. I've found that different companies have a different focus on the models they create. I buy from several. WWG is known for their excellent textures. TerrainLinX is unique for giving card stock buildings LEGO™-like modularity. And they've got some amazing set pieces like the Maiden. The WWG sets positively ooze ambiance. This might mean the models are perfect for your game, or it might mean that the feel of the set isn't quite what you want. Fat Dragon Games is another company I buy a lot from. They focus on making things easy to build and texture things to get a good result while trying to minimize the amount of ink used. They also try to make things more of a generic building block in their designs: where WWG will produce sets that have a distinct feeling, FDG tries to make their models more neutral so they have a broader appeal. There's a lot of overlap between the sets FDG and WWG offer but also a lot of differences, so I like having both. I'm also a sucker for props and having props from both companies really lets me be diverse. I only play fantasy, but there are also a bunch of companies doing modern, SF, or other models out there. |

Thank you all for answering. I saw the the Dave graffam site, But not enough variety. The one guy hit it on the head it is the textures that did it for me. I know it sounds silly but a few hours with a tooth pick and the lines on the paper and BAM you have an embossed terrain set. It looks beutiful. My son has these pieces setting everywhere. And I do not have to worry because if he breaks it (him having the 32 cups of coffee hand tremor , that comes with being 9), I just build another. The fat dragon, To be honest I could not follow their website layout not done well, Plus they looked drab. And talking about a Niche' market I have a shop where I do Tatts' and piercings and sell comics and games. That is a niche' market. And then where I live here in the south, In I think it's called 1947, But people aint caught up yet. I hope in all honesty that your business stays small a queit little niche' in a small corner. And Gods' help you guys if the Empire of the Game World  ever decides to do this. Then your $12.00 set will be $87.00, Why, Because come on, Ya know.I won't call myself an graphic artist but I have done work for a few companies a gaming company in Canada, And I did some work for Terry Pratchett's Merchandising arm. Plus I have done some color work. So I am far from a pro but, I've got my toe in ya' know. So um I think I am rambling here. What was I writing about . Hold on... Textures. Yeah take a toothpick wrap the end in a soft tape like white medical, And place the wall, floor whatever and lay it on something flat and softish. Then draw the recesses of the picture it looks really nice . On a walkway it will make the stone pop,POP I say. Any way that is the secret I have fig'd out so far. More as I find em. Thank you guys for your help. And finally PIRACY, My opinion my 2 cents, I think it is a 2 edged sword, I know that I have bought a lot of music and books because I listened to it off of someones Ipod who had downloaded it. And I know that has forced the smart businesses to offer a few free samples, Cannot beat a freebie. I know author John Ringo gives all his old legacy of the aldenata books away on his site. That would be a good way to test somethings popularity. Like your poll make a few models(simple) and see which goes quickest. As for me I have spent a few hundred bucks on your stuff, I aint giving shit away. I earned, paid for it. You want buy it. Anyway, I am gonna get in an argument today I can tell I feel ill tempered all ready. Thanks guys good folding.

I've seen a number of competitor products over the years and the almost none came close to the rich textures ww uses. Also as I am a HUGE builder of ww I find that most other people stuff doesn't really blend well with my WW stuff so I don't like using them together. Stones edges is the only other company I found that had as nice of textures as ww and was close enough in style to use with them. WW even once sold a stone edges set, the watch tower. |

WWG is the best if for only one reason. Back up. Last week my hard drive refused to boot up. I was bummed. But not nearly as bummed as when I found that the flash drive with all my GM stuff was empty. Thought I had backed it up a couple of months ago when I got the flash drive, but nooooooo. I procrastinated, and now all those files are gone. Except WWG d/l. I still have four downloads left on most of the stuff I bought, except the WWG stuff I got from RPGNow or where ever. That stuff is gone, but the stuff I got of this site is there for me to re download. If for the fact that WWG has TLX stuff, and their art work is the best, and their stuff has interiors, and that it is all modular, and their selection is great, and their prices are great. Well, you get my drift. |
