The thread on Serenity got me to thinking about what other T.V. shows and movies might be down with First Light.

Some are obvious, some less so, and some...

An old televsion show that has likely passed out of most people's memories, but lingers fondly in mine own is. In particular the looks quite doable, with the exception of the spherecal sections. I liked the show enough from when I was a very young pup that I named my bases in the computer game X-Com Shado.

What other models do people think they want to attempt?

The Auld Grump, the strangely colored hair in anime can be traced back to the purple wigs in Project UFO... it was much more popular in Japan than it was in either the United States or the United Kingdom...

As far as the more obvious stuff, there's a whole slew of ships from Star Wars.

I'd love to see curved walls in future FL expansions, because I'm itching to make the Millenium Falcon! There's other ships with larger interiors quite suitable for combat, like the Corellian Blockade Runner from the first 3 minutes of A New Hope, and who's head wouldn't explode when they see a Star Destroyer?

Let's see. According to Star Wars.com, a is 1,600 meters long. In the Star Wars RPG, one square = one meter. So, you've got a ship that's 1,600 squares, and at 1"/square, the model would be 133' long. Uh, nevermind. Sheesh. That's not even a Super Star Destroyer!

That issue has been beaten to death by us Star Wars fans - there are whole websites devoted to such issues:



The old 8 km length is in all likelihood untrue - at least most of the time.

It certainly doesn't help, that ILM used different scaled models throughout the entire saga.

The SSD is HUGE. Period.

To go from the sheer size of the SSD to something, well... a lot smaller - - a show with a whopping 8 episodes from back in 1978. The show was about a space garbage truck... for some reason it never caught on (it played against Wonder Woman... Mmmm... Lynda Carter...). Great acting, great sets, deep and meaningful plot... Who needs 'em! Quark was a sitcom, and in many ways a predecessor to Red Dwarf. Even as a kid I saw holes in the plots, but, well... it was fun. (And the clones played by the Doublemint Twins were cute...) Be warned that '70s costumes and hair are visible on the link...

But in the case of a game a garbage scow might make a good ship for adventurers, able to pass unnoticed and unmolested in the darkest ports, but equally at home cleaning up the mess left behind by the Queen Mary on her last trip to a shining port.

speaking of Lucas and tv shows, I just heard on the radio that George is making a SW tv show set between EpIII and IV. Anyone else here that or are the glue fumes gettin to me again?

It's just not going to work. Part of the glory of the original Star Wars was the vast background already in place. Blanks were filled in over time, some pronounced cannon, others denied. But then along came the prequels and urinated all over many thought to be "established" concepts. Times and ages have become distorted, relationships rewritten, origins altered. A TV series can only continue such a trend. And while I certainly wouldn't mind a SW TV show, I'd really prefer it stay as far away as possible from the established story (the better to damage it less).

BTW DIfferent physics in the SW and ST universe. If the SW universe uses lasers even amplified they would do no harm to a ST ships shields. Same as fighters...they'd just pancake at shields edge. Proton torpedoes would be the equvilent of nukes and could batter shields down or irradiate the crew and shipboard systems. Warp speed is not hyperspace Point A *blip* point B, tactically it would be superior, while strategically hyperspace would be the more usefull.

Ah yes.. the nerdiest debate in all of Sci-fi. I recall it from my high school days. I believe the one time I engaged went something like this:

ME: A Star Destroyer would obliterate the Enterpise
THE OTHER GUY: PAH! Their lasers wouldn't even breach the Enterprises sheilds!
M: Ion cannons
TOG: What?
M: ION CANNONS. They bypass shields and fry electrical systems. Enterprise would be dead in space before they did squat.
TOG: So? All Enterprise needs is one good photon up the ISD's engines and blammo!
M: Fighters
TOG: What about 'em?
M: The empire would just throw fighters at the torpedos. They need not even shoot them down, they could just collide with them. I guarantee you'd run out of torpedoes before the hagar bays empty of fighters. And that's assuming Enterprise doesn't suffer one of it's myriad power failures and have to "run a level one diagnostic". Is there an episode where that DOESN'T happen?
