I just realized that you could easily convert Sea Maiden into the Broadsides and Boarding Game! I just love it. Download the rules at Look in the Midnight Warriors junk drawer. I downloaded these rules from the Hasbro site a year ago. Mark off ten squares by ten squares on the Masterboard. Then draw diagnoal lines as shown on page 7 of the rulebook. Don't worry about making spaces for your cards (see below). It's actually better to place your movement cards along the side or just choose your movements and draw them face up from your "move" pile. Make some islands out of foam or use the island pieces from the Pirate of the Spanish Main game by Wizkids Games. The original game had five islands. See page 7 of the rulebook. Take two ships from the aforementioned PotSM game for the Masterboard map. Or use the metals ships from Dread Pirate or Master and Commander games. You can also use the magnets as damage markers from these games. Any non ship looking marker can do in a pinch. Print out the damage markers from the Sea Maiden files and cut into your favorite shape. The original game came with circular damage markers. Make at least six (three for each side), but you can make more. Make ten cannons for each ship (five for each side). Total 20. You can make your own playing cards using cardstock or use standard playing cards and designate a move for each card. There was Turn Starboard, Turn Port, Move Ahead, Remain in Place, and Mast or Hull Damage. Make or designate three cards for each possible move for each player. You should have a total of 30 cards, 15 for each player. (I can scan the cards from the game if you like, as long as the game is out of print). If you are using playing cards, you can use the following format assuming each player has their own deck: 2's = Turn Starboard, 3's = Turn Port, 4's = Move Ahead, Face Card = Remain in Place, and Ace = Mast or Hull Damage. Find 22 miniatures for each ship for crew and 1 additional miniature for the captain. Total 44 minis and two captains for the entire game. You can find some fun pirate figures at party stores and mount them or use various minis in the gaming community (heck, use your Gamesworkshop factions). Also pirate foldups are on the web somewhere. Or you can use colored glass beads or stones to use as markers for each side. Make sure the captain is different from all the other markers on your crew. Grab two six-sided dice. And finally, build two Sea Maidens! You might want to use the non-grid set and mark off your own sections per the rules (see page 5) or adapt using the 1.5 squares or 1 inch squares. However, you can easily just use the rule of thumb where each cannon placement is a section and relate the rest of the ship as per the rules. Basically, eyeball it. This will allow any ship deck configuration that you may already have built. The layout is not complicated. Check out the ship layout in the rules and you will see what I mean more clearly. The original ships had four masts representing five parts or hits. I would suggest with your three mast Sea Maiden that the first two masts (foremast and the main mast) must take two hits before they are damaged and the last mast take just one). And viola you have your own Boardsides and Boarding Parties game. You can also adapt the boarding and pirate vs pirate rules from any of your favorite games such as Mordheim, d20, WFRP, Savage Worlds, etc. Yo! Ho! |
