Well, after looking around for my buildigns for my zombie project, I found these great buildings from WWG. Kudos to the creators of this line. I had seen another companies "Modern" buildings and did not like the style or the work that was done with them. I had looked at other WWG items in the past, but never had a use for them, and while doing a search on RPGnow for something else these came up as new product. So my quest to create a city is done. Now its off to print and build (One hell of alot of buildings)

I did goof around a bit last night with a few buildings and how to print them. I found that if I printed two pages on a 5x8 index card, and clicked the "Print to fit" button, they scale out pretty well. The regular apartment building measures out to be around 2 5/16 in length with the door opening at 5/8 high. The 10mm figures I am using are around 1/2 inch high to the top of their head and so once I place them on some metal washers they will stand at about the right height, or atleast close enough for my needs.

Although the vehicles are great, I dont think that I can really use them as they might be too fiddly, so I might wind up using some "N" scale vehicles instead. I might try to do some WWG's as filler or as wrecks though. We will see.

Right now my plan for my game is to have multiple seperate 1x2foot boards each of different areas of a city with the final goal of escaping the city, ether though the usual means of helicopter, car or boat. This way as long as WWG still supports this "era" of buildings I can add on to the city with new release.

I am tentatively planning on using a modified "All Flesh Must Be Eaten" by Eden Studios. Even though a RPG, due to their style of rules it will play very well as a straight miniatures game. Some things need to be left out, but other than that it is a great game.

Welcome to the boards, Steve. I'm pretty sure I know which other company's Modern buildings you were looking at, and you are 100% correct - WWG's product blow them out of the water.

One thing to keep note of. Printing to fit a 5" x 8" card is a great way to scale the products - but you should check the page sizes when you do that. WWG products don't always stick to a 8.5" x 11" page, so if you do that with a non-standard size page, the scaling will be off on that page in relation to everything else you print. You might consider figuring out what the scale % is that works for the size you're aiming for, and then print using that, since that will be constant regardless of the page size.

Thanks for the heads up on the scaling issue and the page sizes. I will keep that in mind, and hopefully what I have done already wont conflict with what I will be doing.

if you could give me a heads up and let me know where I might find some of these non-regular pages I would appreciate it. IS that something that happens in every set or just on some of the older ones?

I am going to go buy the "streets" set in a bit to actually do my first board this evening. When it is done I will definately post something.

To be honest, I think most if not all of the various sets have the non-standard page sizes, and they're not terribly consistent.

For example, in Streets of Mayhem, most of the tiles are the right size, while most of the props are not. In Armory, most of the Garage file (the walls) are the right size, but the 3 floors are not. Same with the Apartment file. In Bits of Mayhem, the flats are the right size, and most of the building parts file is the right size, but the last page of building parts (the sides of the roof) are not.

again thanks. I bit the bullet last night and bought both "streets" and "bits" of mayhem. So I have seen what you mean by the "irregular" sizes. BUT, on a good note, I have not had an issue. I am no longer printing on 5x8 index card I am printing individual pages on 3x5's with the "print to fit" option. I have not had an issue yet with scaling, but perhaps that is also due to the small sizes of the buildings. Each tile is now measuring 2.25 inches square instead of 7 inches so if there is a fault in the printing it is so small that Idid not notice.

I built a 11.25 square city board last night. it has a 3 tile gas, garage, fenced area, a few simple apartments/buildings, and some regular grass area. I didnt want to over-do each board so it is simple. It works out great because I can have a "city grid" set up with a 5x5 block of tiles. so running across (or up) the 2nd and 4th tile set is a road. this way the setup is completely modular. and I can use them as I see fit. I am trying to figure out a way to make a large warehouse out of a 3x3 block.

So now its off to look through some other peoples messages and see what glues to use. I like the look of that glue pen so I might have to try that. with the pieces being so small it does get a bit fiddly with using a regular bottle of elmers.

Your zombie city sounds extremely cool. I can't wait to see it!

A note on the tiny pieces: when scaling down to that degree, you might want to try printing the vehicles or smaller props on 60 lb cardstock, instead of the index cards (which are roughly the same as 110 lb, I believe). This'll make folding the tiny tabs much more manageable.

Welcome to the forums Steve! I like the idea of your project alot and sounds like it would be fun to play. I'm also a fan of AFMBE, but since the guys I play with don't like zombie games, the book sits on my shelf, collecting dust!

For the little tiny tabs, I find that there's nothing better than super glue gel. Dries super quickly, and very stong.

I use Zap-A-Gap CA+ (green bottle).

well here is now my dilema, barring running out of a color ink cartridge at 11:41. I need your guys opinion. Is this too busy with the way I have the roads done? Especially now looking at it with a few pieces together, even with the large warehouse, it just seems there are too many roads and makes it unrealistic looking.

as a solution, do you think it would be better to run the grid like this:

RRRRR
GGRGG
GGRGG

G=ground or building
R=road or raised train platform

this still gives me 11.25 square boards but it lessens the road a bit. It will also limit (to an extent) the size buildings I can have, but that might not be a terrible thing either.

So any feedback regarding similar projects or general opinion would be appreciated.

Oh, and yes, the left wall fo the warehouse is warped. Once I put the other store room againt that wall it should straighten out. I also have to touch up the edges, but if I changes schemes I might not be able to salvage this building anyway.

For one, I think it looks beautiful, great (WIP) build. In response to your question, I dont think it looks out of place at all. I think you should leave it the way it is...

It might be just a little too busy. If you think about it, each sqaure is what, 35' or so? Normally a city block is a little longer than that. I think for game play purposes you can easily do 70' or 105' blocks without too much trouble, (which you have a few of), but the 35' ones are probably a tile short.

well.... I did it (almost), I was able to save about 90% of my work and save some of the tiles for future use. The raised train platform didnt make it though.



by tonight I should have some more done hopefully. Damn, this is addicting.

I'm not even sure why my setup bothered me. Chris from wargamesworld had a similar setup, but I guess since mine is much smaller and not as good it just didnt look right.

Thanks for the compliment on the boards. I think I have reworked them too much though as I am starting to warp them a touch. too much fighting with them this afternoon. Nothing a few bricks cant fix though.

I have a few more variations of roads to do, but I do like this way much better. I like the aspect of the long clean stretch of road. It might make the player feel like he can speed off and get away. I cant wait for the first player to run head long into a building though. Should be fun.

I like the bigger blocks. That really, REALLY looks good.


To be honest, until I saw your other thread with the tiny build, it looked so good that it didn't even occur to me that they weren't normal sized. Now that I know, I can see little differences - but the build is so good that I really didn't notice until it was pointed out. I mean, I read it, but it just didn't initially register looking at the pictures.

thanks. The figures I am using are about 10mm tall so each regular tiles is scaled to 2.25 inches so each board goes to 11.15 by 11.25 inches. so my builds are about 1/3rd the size of normal. the "tiny" build was done just to see if I can do it.

Work has begun on the hospital. It is a 10 tile build. the "West" wing is a bit interesting with a nurses station, surgery room and morgue. I'm pretty well covered with that section, I just need to finish the "East" wing with the waiting room, doctors office and then patients rooms.

running out of steam tonight and making mistakes, so I am calling it a night.

well here it is "Mayhem General Trauma Center":



it is pretty much done. I just need to finish the one hallway and the patients room. I want to bulk out more tiles before I do all the interior details.

And since I am inept with the files and being abl to modify them, I have to get tricky, like using three panels from a phone booth for the front door. It came out pretty good, I just need to reprint it a bit bigger.



But my favorite part of the building is the morgue and surgery room:



It didnt come out too good in the picture, but I did have one of the slab drawers open showing a sheet hanging off to one side for effect, after all it is a zombie game.

so next it will be the police station/Town hall and then generic city tiles.

ok.... here is where you get to laugh at me. As I said before I am technology inept.

here is how I do it,

I use acrobat reader 4 to open the files.

I print on 3inch x 5inch index card with the "print to fit" option.

ummmm........ Yup, thats about it. I do some minor bashing to the kits, but overall they are built to spec. If I need something extra I will usually jsut print out the sheet that I need the part from and cut it out,like the front doors of the hosptial are the panels from a telephone booth, the morgue "cooler" is just the concrete ground tile with pieces of another floor added for the drawers, and the benches in the waiting room are jsut the wooden flooring tile folded to represent a bench. sorry to not be of more help, but I really dont know what I am doing.....
