Post subject:  Masterboard Warping and other newbie questions...

I would have thought this would have been cover here before, but a forum search didn't reveal a single topic with the word warping!

My masterboard has warped so bad it looks like a bucket seat for a Mustang...

Nothing will flatten it out!  Not even my Aunt Rose!

How the hell do you get them to stay flat?

While I'm asking questions, how about paper?  The only thing I can find readily is 65lb card.  What does everyone else use and is there a good place to get it?  Anyone else using an Epson Stylus C84 (a very nice, inexpensive, moderately fast and econimical printer) - what's the thickest card you've put through it?

And what about pens - I know someone (Denny) has found the optimal pens manufacturer for this process - what do you recommend?

Areana rocks - Can't wait to show it to my group!  I'm keeping it covered till it's complete - it's driving them crazy!

NezziR,

MasterBoard Warping:

I think there is a thread somewhere buried in here about warping Masterboards. The solution is really simple. Flip your board over and apply tiles to the opposite side as well. This will flatten out your board and offer you a completely new ground tile arrangement. The other thing to keep in mind is that this all depends on the type of glue youre using. Some white glues have a really high water content and tend to warp worse than others. My personal favorite at the moment is the UHU Office Pen by Saunders (VERY low water content).

Paper:

You can find 110lb cardstock at Staples and Walmart. Any office supply store should carry it in one form or another. If not in most cases they can order it in for you. I buy the Georgia-Pacific 110lb cardstock in a pack of 250 sheets. Lasts forever and the price is very reasonable.

Pens:

For "Edging" a black felt will suit most of your needs just fine. Any black felt will do. If you want the full spectrum and top of the line felts you can invest in a set of PrismaColors but they are expensive.

Hope that helps and happy folding ;)

I use 67lb cardstock.  I've used it for years and its perfect for me.  As for Masterboards I use foamboard.  To keep it from warping try and store it on a flat surface or sandwiched upright behind something heavier.  I've never had one warp.  I'm currently building 7" x 7" foamboard tiles to replace the boards.  I have 12 done so far and they don't warp and are simple to store in a shoebox.

It's a bit of a drastic measure, but one fairly sure way to prevent Masterboard warpage is to affix it to a non-warpable surface, such as a sheet of veneir, masonite, or whiteboard material.

It's a bit heavy, and a bit spendy....but it's certainly going to cut down on your warpage problems.

Denny is on the track here.  I build furniture and when I glue a thin veneer to a piece of stock, I always have to glue a piece of veneer to the other side to keep it from warping.  Both sides try to warp at once and end up keeping the board straight.
Another option is using a cork bulliten board and glueing your tiles to that.  It's heavy enough not to warp, perfect for using pushpins to keep your Arena from moving around and you can hang it up on the wall when you're not using it!
I, myself, used a piece of 3/4 inch plywood, hinged in the center for easy storage.  Heavy, but it's not going to get knocked around during play, that's for sure!

3M spray adhesive works, and does not warp the board. (I managed to track down a can, got it for half price on clearance.)

If your willing to spend a lot more money than I am you can print to Crack 'n' Peel or some other brand of adhesive paper.

Nezzir,

If you're a little crafty and have a few bucks to spend, you might want to follow in the footsteps of the master and build a "Luthyr Board."

I've been planning to do something of the sort, but haven't found the time yet...

I built the same type of board but I used foamboard instead.  If you have a sharp blade and a steady hand it works just as well.  I'm halfway through the project so I'll try and get pics up when its all done.

That is a great idea - I think I will start on that project.  I most of the way through building an Arena - it's my first WW project and it's knocking me out!  I can't believe how good it looks.

For a long time now I've been constructing buildings, houses, castle pieces and the like out of cast bricks (casting with dental plaster).  I have a huge selection of molds.  My eventual plan it to have everything made out of this, but its extremely time consuming.  For the cost and time it took to make a single building with the cast bricks, I've built half of an Arena!

I think I will try the spray adhesive - I'm a foam fighter, so I should have some around here somewhere...

An option similar to the aforementioned game board is a convenient sized sheet of plexiglass. Thin stuff is available at Home Depot and glass stores and isn't too expensive.

I've had good results in printing maps and terrain on regular paper - Simply trim and glue together to make the proper sized play area and slide under the plexiglass (I use a 2'x3' sheet on our gaming table). It looks good, you can make notes and marks all you want (with waterbased markers) and simply remove it unharmed at the end. You can store a large variety of these rolled up in tubes or tucked neatly into a portfolio folder.

You can get a bit fancier and make a raised surface out of thin plywood. If you frame it the sheets can be stored under the glass and it will all stay nice, neat, and ready for play.

Having played, and run, on a raised playing surface, I cannot recommend it heartily enough. Makes almost 'everything' easier.

Now, all that being said. I will admit that I have not yet tried any of the Worldworks 'walls' and such on the plexiglass, so set-up of these props may not be as convenient as with another surface. But the supporting props (bars, tables, cabinets, etc) still add a grand dimension to the game table.

Hope that rather wordy missive helps someone.

Using plexiglass is the best solution for a 2D gaming environment.  You can write all over the plexiglass with dry erase markers or China Markers, put your nice maps under neath, and never have to re-reprint them or anything.

BUT, plexiglass is not a good 3D solution.  WW models will slide all over God's Creation when resting atop plexigalss, even if you penny-strip. and 'clip-it.'

Foam Core is nice, cheap and readily available, but for slightly more cash, you can go to a Home Depot and purchase a more rigid piece of wood or fiber- or particle-board.  Keep it thin so it stays fairly light--but i PROMISE it will never warp on you like foamcore.  You also cannot insert pushlpins in it like foamcore, so there is a problem.  But it has a rougher surface so there is less model slippage.  Its a decent compromise, and is the solution I am currently using.

Ultimately, Luthyr is on to something--there has to be a 'best of both worlds' solutuion here we are missing...
