So Dungeon Works is being retired... I for one am going to miss it, though I am happy to say I already own it, and have it saved to a CD rom. I have had a lot of fun with the set over the last year or so. I have given away entire dungeons as gifts and prizes, and used it to introduce people to paper modelling.
DW was how I got hooked on World Works (though not my first purchase.) A friend of mine was looking to creat a semi permanent set of rooms and corridors that he could use for his RPG. I went looking on the web to see what I could find, and convinced him to buy a set. (I have been a paper modeller since the 1970s.)
We spent about 20 hours happily assembling his models, and creating a map to use what we were making using Dungeon Crafter ( ) I got to play in the resulting adventure a few months ago, since I was familiar with the layout of the dungeon (though he added a few more 'secret' areas to place that I didn't know about). It was the first game I had gotten to play in about three years. (I normally run)
I played a paladin who had been in 'That Gods Forsaken Hole' once before, and who now needed to return to the place to finish the task begun 'so long before'... I had fun being a rather old, angry, (one might almost say 'grumpy') and righteous paladin of the faith. (Though Good he was not a nice person at all...) My friend mounted the individual rooms on foamcore cut to fit the corridors etc., which actually works better with DW than it does with GR. The board sections held their shape pretty well, surviving a trip from Maine to New Hampsire in a bunch of cardboard boxes, with only one wall becoming warped enroute.
My own first purchase was a couple of weeks later, when I purchased Castle Works and Village Works together. I held out for almost a month after that before purchasing DW for myself. (And in my enthusiasm I used up an entire package of heavy index paper and a cartridge of ink. I still have some of that pile, and now have maybe a half inch of it remaining.
